Cassius Clay is a cowardly weasel took up Islam in order to dodge the draft.
You are correct. Ali was the greatest heavyweight of all time. Even though he could have served his time in the military as a boxer, he chose not to and paid the price. He was the highest paid athlete in the world as the time. You may not like him - and I do not agree with his politics- but he stuck to his convictions. That's more than I can say for some of the Rs in COngress right now. Don't confuse Ali with the terrorists - that is a huge mistake!
Dick Cavett used to have Ali on his talk show. Ali could hold his own when word sparring with Cavett. They were good friends for years.
Ted Williams would consider both of you cowards.
IMO, Mike Tyson was far more dominant. Two rounds per opponent; they ran from him in fear.
Ted Williams would consider "both of you" cowards? What kind of crap is that? I served in the military for 10 years, including SE Asia during the war. That doesn't mean I don't understand what principle is! Ali would never have served one minute in combat and he still forfeited his career. By the way, the NY Boxing Commission is the entity that took his license and the Sup Ct held that what they did was unconstitutional - and it was no leftie court in the 60s and early 70s. Grow up!
Welcome to FR.
Guess your not familiar with Ted. He served twice, both times in the prime of his career. I doubt he shares your opinion of bravery in relationship to career. Grow up.
I believe he was. Further more the chances are that others put Ali up to this. I understand that he has not changed his proper name of Cassius Clay legally. Daniel Pipes does a masterful job here.
I still fail to see the idea that being a superb athelete makes a "great man/woman". The English language provides for superb qualifing statements. Why do many of the general public still fall for this type of evaluation?. The qualifier should be this. A great man in his profession. He was taken over by a religious body. One explanation was to keep organised crime away from his affairs- wise move though.
This idea that some exceptional excellence ie: the movies and sport produces "great men/woman"- surely is flawed. Take away THAT and see where these people really stand.
Muhammed Ali is a giant with feet of clay.
I wish President Bush would treat his friends the way he treats his enemies.
>Mike Tyson was far more dominant. Two rounds per opponent; they ran from him in fear.
Buster Douglas didn't run.
But now he's a filthy muslim.
Ali may have wrong about many things, but he was never afraid of any man in the ring and he never quit.
Ali was the progenitor of all the self-absorbed, poor sportsmanship athletes that came thereafter. See Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, et al.
"War is against the teachings of the Holy Koran"
Has he ever read the Koran? It's nothing but "slaughter the infidels...blah, blah, blah"
Check out the guy with the beer can in the background, never loses his grip.
I'm not sure why Teddy Ballgame would consider me a coward on the basis of my post. Having sacrificed 5 1/2 prime years of his own amazing athletic career to serve in two wars, it's reasonable to assume he must have loathed Ali's position. But I'm not sure he considered Ali a "coward." A traitor, perhaps. I don't know. Perhaps you either knew Ted Williams personally, or can cite references to comments he made about Ali's decision.
