I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket."
I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.
A: It was about 1/2 way between us and the coastline when we first called uh, in the LAX (he said "lax") center guy (inaudible)
So what was the position of the aircraft? How far from the coast line? And was he still westbound at that point?
I'm following up on the Canada story about the anti-aircraft missiles that were found traveling in Canada. Seems the driver was "confused" about where he was going.
The article says...
"The military contracted a company to deliver some armoured personnel carriers to Montreal," said Peel Regional Police Const. Dameon Okposio..."The driver was pre-occupied with some personal and family issues and got confused about the shipment date. That's where everything began to spiral out of control...The trailer was carrying two M113 armoured personnel carriers bearing Department of National Defence licence plates and loaded with ground-to-ground missile launchers..."(The driver) was supposed to have taken them to Montreal" on Thursday, said Const. Laurie Perks of York Region Police..."The (Global Positioning Satellite) system showed that he wasn't in Montreal, so the owner of the truck reported it stolen...Calls to the trucking company were not immediately returned...Okposio said the driver will not be charged...It's found that he had no criminal intent to deprive the armed forces of their equipment or do anything with them. It was just a matter of confusion and that matter has been resolved."
So, just where was the driver if not in Montreal? Just on a leisurly drive out Hwy 407, heading in the opposite direction? I wonder if the driver was of mid-eastern descent? I hear that in some parts of Canada, they recognize Islamic law...

I noticed at another forum, someone had posted a gif of the LAX radar for the 28th of Nov. (two days after the fact) Although it was two days later, the flight traveled the same course, and when it attained 6000ft in the same area, the "ghost" effect reappeared!
The radar gif posted by VAPilot shows the tracking for Nov. 28th. The event happened on Nov.26. The ATC audio at LiveATC.com has the pilot reporting a rocket at approx 12:59PST. This audio archive is dated Nov. 26. But the interesting aspect of VA's post, shows the same "ghosting" effect present in the same flight, two days later, at approx the same time. I have tried to sync the audio with the radar (at the proper date) and the time clocks are off a bit. (in relation to one another) The passengers were held at Chicago by the FBI and only one person on the left window aisle reported seeing the event. (this in addition to pilots) They were asked what they saw 10 to 15 minutes into the flight. The flight was aloft for 4 minutes at the 6200 altitude arrival. According to the ATC tape, the rocket sighting was reported at around 12:59. (11 min into flight) This puts the sighting very close to shore, near Costa Mesa, between flight level 130 and 170 at my best effort. But the clocks may be off more than perceived. One thing important, the ghosting seems to be a common deal in the LAX control zone.

I noticed that.....thanks for the ping.
I read that the guy had a big blow up with his woman....that might leave anyone a little distracted.
Thanks, and thank you to the Pprune poster.
bttt
Good to know. I'm flying today.
Let us know if you happen to see any bottle rockets!
Good luck, too.
Oh I will. If I can...
Thanks for finding the audio Velveeta, cleaning it up Burbank Karl and the ping tertiary01.
I posted the gif at LAX correctly for 11/26
Tom Guy posted the passur map for 11/26. The same anomoly appears on 11/28?
Remember when this similar incident happened some weeks back we were told it was a flock of birds? At 10,000 feet? Also over the water? Also told there were radar "misreads" for that incident which also were "common"?
Not sure what to make of it all, but Burbank's audio recordings certainly points to something....
I think the message in that post was referring to the ppprune site and not here. I got confused as well when I first read the post until I realized that VAPilot is a member on the other place.
Since the rocket was apparently able to attain an altitude of at least 6,000 to 8,000 feet, it would be a good idea if some could survey people/posters in the Costa Mesa area to see if a loud, thunderous noise was heard about 12:59 on Saturday, November 26th. Is that possible?
According to a post on that ppprune site, a bottle rocket with I assume the capabilites needed would sound like a Harrier taking off and even make the ground shake. Seems like someone would have noticed that in Costa Mesa.
