It's a crime both horrific and crass — a welfare mother smothers her crying baby in his crib, dumps him in a trash bin, then continues to collect public assistance on him for the next 4 1/2 years.
That's the case that was laid out in Manhattan Supreme Court yesterday against Diatra Hester-Bey, charged killing 14-month-old Devon Rivers on Feb. 29, 2000. "She smothered his face in a pillow, and then left him for dead as she took a nap," in the West 41st Street Red Cross shelter where they lived, Assistant DA Andrew Seewald told jurors.
Later, she dressed the baby's corpse and took it in a carriage, by subway, to Queens, where she tossed it away like garbage.......
The body has never been found. She continued to collect welfare checks on Devon's behalf — just over $100 a month — and has been charged with manslaughter and grand larceny.
Hester-Bey, of Brownsville, Brooklyn, was only arrested after an August 2004 fight with a boyfriend, Robert Potter.....ratted Hester-Bey out on the alleged smothering.
Hester-Bey first told cops that the baby died in his crib, and that she abandoned his corpse, still in the stroller, in Queens. After some two days of questioning, Hester-Bey tearfully admitted to the smothering.............

I didn't accuse you of racism. I save that accusation for those I know to be bigots, based on a history of targating specific groups for condemnation.
Outrageous----the details of the child-killing are chilling. She'll probably get off with a few months behind bars for murdering her child.
Other factors might have incited the killing---maybe she had a new boyfriend, and the child was in the way?
You're right--far more whites are on welfare than anyone. This kind of evil indifference has been and is found in every racial, income group. The legacy of "choice" is in part responsible for our society's degeneration into a state where the value of life has declined.
And THAT my friends is what I was talking aboutin an earlier post too when a loving family diciplines their child with a pat on the butt and some busy body calls Social Services. How come then do we hear soooooooooo many cases just like this one? Where is Social Services? How did this woman collect that money for four and a half years? Wasn't someone checking on her? How come so many cases get by Social Services yet raise hell with a family doing right by their children?
God bless that little baby. At least he is out of the wicked grasp of this woman and in the arms of the Lord.

I did not see Leofl refer to anyone's race. In fact I read his post to refer to the alleged perp as a "parasite" because of her behavior, not race. If one cannot judge another by their actions, how can one discern anything about people at all?

You implied I was taking a stance because she was a black welfare mother. My stance was againt a Killer, plain and simple. She is a parasite and should be exterminated with extreme prejudice.....period

I will gladly target welfare mothers or fathers who mistreat and kill children.....I will even pay for the bullet or pull the trigger.
Children are precious and it is our duty as parents to protect and nurture them. I would kill ANYBODY who would threaten my boys!!!!

She was living in a public shelter (probably gets tax funds). No one noticed the child was missing?
This illustrates the problems airhead liberals have wrought re the breakup of the family.

Curiously, the article mentions nothing about race... "veronica" just assumed, I guess, that a mother who kills her child and then collects the welfare payments is Black, and then attacks you for calling said mother a parasite... Curious...

Woman smothers child, discards the body like yesterday's newspaper and continues to collect MY money earmarked to make that child's life better.
She deserves a swift bullet and a shallow grave.
