Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act

Sen. Obama Warns TV to Clean Up or Congress Will Act By Doug Halonen

If the industry doesn't take significant steps to make it easier for parents to control what their children view on television, Congress will step in and legislate. That was a warning shot fired by Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in a speech Wednesday in Washington.

Story continues below...

"The amount of questionable content spilling across our screens is growing by the year," Sen. Obama said at a press conference to release a new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation that says the number of sex scenes on TV has been increasing dramatically over the past several years.

"Once again, we find ourselves asking those in charge to serve the needs of a nation that has a higher calling than simply peddling indecency and materialism for profit," the senator said.

The study, which examined a representative example of broadcast and cable TV network shows, said that 70 percent of programs included some sexual content this year (with an average of five sex scenes per hour), while only 56 percent did so in 1998 (with 3.2 sex scenes per hour). Among shows that had sexual content, the study said, 14 percent this year included a reference to sexual risks or responsibilities, up from 9 percent in 1998.

But Sen. Obama said he is particularly concerned about the impact television is having on the ability of parents to instill positive values in their children. "Raising your children this way has become exceedingly difficult in a mass media culture that saturates our airwaves with a steady stream of sex, violence and materialism," he said.

But the 9th Circus said the schools can ask/survey little children about sex and parents have no rights concerning said sexual content.

If schools have been bestowed the right to be the purveyors of sexual mores, attitudes, and beliefs......then why shouldn't the t.v. be a free for all too?

Tell your son that our thoughts and prayers are with him. God bless him, and we all say "thank you" for his service.

I did not attack you.

How about getting rid of your private TV. No one is forcing you to own it, much let alone view it. Is this a new constitutional option the liberals want to invent? If enough people thought that TV was trash, and opted out, instead of expecting once again the government to intervene, maybe we could get back our morality. But instead, too many folks have a television and expect Hollywood to be the moral compass coming into their homes and the government to regulate a cesspool.

You raised your children quite a while ago. I remember 20 years ago. TV was not NEARLY as bad as it is today. You had it easy. Try keeping your kids from the crap today. It's damn near impossible and I'm vigilant about it.

In a perfect world everyone would get rid of their tv's. Since that will never happen, we need to watch what we show on tv to protect our kids. I can't believe there are people here arguing with that.

Oh, and I salute your son in Iraq for his service to our country.

If you'd read the thread, you'd have known my kids are 23, 22, and 19. I censored my kids, I didn't depend upon the government to do it. I know my kids better than they do. My oldest is a med student, and I allowed her to watch stuff that I wouldn't let the others watch. My middle is a soldier in Iraq protecting our freedoms. My youngest is still figuring it out. The solution it to get rid of the tv. If enough did, the marketeers would have to rethink their programming options.

"TV is such a wasteland"

I agree, mindless drivel. There might be a gem now and then, but the thens aren't worth it. I've given up on it. And don't even get me started on the Christmas advertising. One of the main reasons I stopped watching TV was the commercialism of this holiday. TV almost ruined Christmas for me.

Osama Obama needs to tell his fellow muzzies at Al Jazeera to clean up their barbaric channel and join the civilized world before he criticizes anything on the U.S. airwaves.

Osama Obama's needs to tell his fellow muslims that beheading infidels, homocide bombings, mutilations in the name of their death cult is not considered entertainment by a civilized people.

Two people having sex on the village green isn't the same as removing a televison from your own personal home.

mad puppy, I think everyone agrees with you. There is nothing but garbage on TV. However, many of us here believe that government is not the answer. Once you open the "censor" door you will end up with much more censorship than you could ever imagine.

Purchasing a television is an option. Don't buy one. You don't need one for survival.

Why does Osama care about US TV? He must be hiding in Chicago.

I like the message. Do I trust the guy...no way, but I do like the message. Besides I don't here any "conservative " republicans stepping up to the mic to take a slap at hollyweird. Maybe Obamma just beat them to the punch

Columnist Says Barack Obama 'Lied To The American People;' Asks Publisher to Withdraw Obama's Book

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1189687/posts

"I feel sad having to expose Barack Obama," says Martin, "but the man is a complete fraud. The truth is going to surprise, and disappoint, and outrage many people who were drawn to him. He has lied to the American people, and he has sought to misrepresent his own heritage.

"Obama's life story is vastly different from the one he portrays. My point: if he will lie about his mother and father, what else is he lying about? Can we expect 'bimbo eruptions?'

"Fiction: Obama stated in his Convention speech: 'My father ... grew up herding goats.' The 'goat herder' claim has been repeated endlessly. It is a lie. Fact: Obama's grandfather, Hussein Onyango Obama was a prominent and wealthy farmer. His son, Obama's father, was a child of privilege, not privation. He was an outstanding student, not a herdsman.

"Fiction: Obama was given an 'African' name. Fact: Obama is a Muslim who has concealed his religion. I am a strong supporter of the Muslim community, and I believe Muslims have been scapegoated. Obama has a great opportunity to be forthright. Instead, he has treated his Muslim heritage as a dark secret. His grandfather was named 'Hussein.' That is an Arabic-Muslim, not African, name. Hussein was a devout Muslim and named his son, Barack Senior, 'Baraka.' Baraka is an Arabic word meaning 'blessed.' Baraka comes out of the Koran and Arabic, not Africa.

"Barack Senior was also a devoted Muslim, and also chose a Muslim name for his son, our own Barack Obama, Junior. Again, his name was an Arabic and Koranic.

Obama has spent a lifetime running from his family heritage and religious heritage. Would his father have given his son a Koranic name if the father was not a devout Muslim? Obama's stepfather was also a Muslim. Obama will be the first Muslim-heritage senator; he should be proud of that fact. There is nothing to be ashamed of in any of the three great Abrahamic religions.
