Sounds like your problem is with the dog, not the tree ;)

"OK, am I the only one who is thinking about Peter?"

My first thought.

When did "christmas" trees get co-opted into being a Christian tradition anyway?

Unless you hang the presents from the ceiling too, the doggy-previewing-the-presents thing will still be a problem. But at least boy-doggies would have less temptation to lift a leg and "water" the tree and surrounding presents.

"Somehow I can't see the self-styled "Satnaists" with their inverted pentagrams and all, sticking one of these trendy monstrosities in their living rooms."

I wasn't referring to "Satanists." The mere act of inverting a powerful symbol is believed to work to negate that power in occult philosophy, so it would not matter who was doing it, or what their intent might be. The very act itself is a negation. That's what I meant.

The Christmas tree comes from the Middle Ages. Is the Christmas tree screwed up? People in this thread are discussing tradition, but the earliest tradition of the Christmas tree was that it be hung from the ceiling. Is your "new tradition" better than "old tradition?" Why? Because you're used to it?

Outside of that, it has to just look absolutely ridiculous.

It "looks" like a uterus...well, it does.

And yet, some more Christmas Tree Legends - this time Inverted

Back in the 7th century a monk from Crediton, Devonshire, traveled to Germany to spread the Word of God. Legend has it that he used the triangular shape of the Fir Tree to describe the Holy Trinity of God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit to the German people. The German people started to revere the Fir Tree as "God's Tree". In the next 5 centuries, the tree became a symbol of Christianity, and was being hung upside-down from the ceiling as a sign of Christianity.

If you're going to use this tree then give your family helium-filled gifts.

It'll be a Christmas they'll never forget.

My friend has been hanging her tree from the wall for years. She started doing it to keep the cats out of it. I'll have to call and tell her that she is a trend setter.

" In the next 5 centuries, the tree became a symbol of Christianity, and was being hung upside-down from the ceiling as a sign of Christianity."

No doubt an overt attempt to negate the supposed pagan influence of a coopted tradition. Many of my ancestors were German speaking, Lutherans, Dutch Reformed and Moravian. There are several traditional practices relating to Advent that are triangular, yet not inverted, at least in this day and time.

"It "looks" like a uterus...well, it does."

No ovaries, then. And, the cervix is exceedingly narrow. Definite candidate for caesarian.

How do you keep the water in the base of an upside down tree?

"How do you keep the water in the base of an upside down tree?"

The same way you keep the presents on the ceiling and cause ornaments to fall up, apparently.

They are making a mockery of Christmas.

And Christmas has made a mockery of the birth of Jesus...But hey, it's a feel good time of the year...

I said the MIDDLE AGES was screwed up.
And yeah I think the inverted tree is pathetic. People have gotten away from the real reason of Christmas. I'd like to share this message...I got it off a Christmas card:

COME AND SEE!

It's a star in the heavens
Come and see!

It's a light in the stable
Come and see!

It's a babe in the manger
Come and see!

It's a miracle...of love

And that's the story of Christmas.

I don't see it that way...if we remember the reason that Jesus came to this Earth. At least we are celebrating the fact He came here for us, we shouldn't forget that.

Certainly people have forgotten the real meaning of Christmas. But I don't know exactly what this is about. It would be in error to define it by history, since no one knows history these days. So it probably means nothing much, other than the fact that human nature likes to go against the grain once in awhile.

I've already bought most of what I am going to buy (not much) for this year. But I'm thinking of buying absolutely nothing for next year. I'll give those close to me cash so they get something. But why reward retailers who hate Christians? No donations. No gifts other than money. Just real time focusing on the real meaning, but only if it is free.
