WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS: BOYCOTT LAUNCHED
Catholic League ^ | 9 November 2005 | William Donohue

WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS:

BOYCOTT LAUNCHED

A woman who recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” received an e-mail response from Customer Service. It appears below in its exact form:

“Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than ‘christmas’ which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with ‘christmas’ red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.”

To which Catholic League president Bill Donohue says: “This statement was signed by someone called Kirby. When I read it, I thought he might be drunk. But I was wrong. We sent Kirby’s response to Wal-Mart’s headquarters only to find that Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager, Public Relations, agrees. After acknowledging that he read Kirby’s response, Fogleman said, in part, the following”:

“As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanza gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates…and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.”

Bill Donohue says: “It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday. Now here is why I am asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations that span seven religious communities to boycott Wal-Mart. Go to its website and search for Hanukkah and up come 200 items. Click on Kwanzaa and up come 77. Click on Christmas, and here’s what you get: ‘We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.’ In other words, Wal-Mart is practicing discrimination.”

"Then explain this: "

Christmas trees!!

How special.

William Donahue's point is certainly valid. I don't understand why most here seem to be bending over to rationalize Walmart's discrimination. Mr. Donahue is certainly on the right side in our cultural war.

Freepers' responses here are reminding me of the boiled frog story. Seems many are getting past the point of jumping out of the kettle.

gee, I avoid Walmart simply because everything they sell is made in China

In the memorandum, M. Susan Chambers, Wal-Mart's executive vice president for benefits, also recommends reducing 401(k) contributions and wooing younger, and presumably healthier, workers by offering education benefits. The memo voices concern that workers with seven years' seniority earn more than workers with one year's seniority, but are no more productive.

The study done by Global Insights, a Boston-based consultancy, finds that Wal-Mart has had a positive impact on job growth in the United States. Between 1985 and 2004, for example, the study finds that Wal-Mart created 210,000 U.S. jobs. Those jobs generally paid wages below the overall norm but in line with wages paid by other retailers.

Chris Hollings, a principal author of the report, says Wal-Mart's benefits package - particularly health care - is in line with other so-called big box retailers. "At least when you look at benefits in the retail sector in general, what other retailers are doing, it was hard for us to see evidence of a real discrepancy there," said Mr. Hollings.

The report contends that the most positive impact of Wal-Mart is on retail prices. During the 19-year period, the study finds that because of Wal-Mart, U.S. food prices were nine percent lower than they would have been without Wal-Mart. Likewise, consumer prices overall would have been three percent higher without Wal-Mart.

The study does tend to agree with critics that Wal-Mart's aggressive global search for low-priced products has contributed to a loss of U.S. manufacturing jobs. Emek Basker of the University of Missouri prepared a study of Wal-Mart's purchases of products from China. "Manufacturing jobs are going to move. It's going to become more efficient to produce overseas or to purchase overseas. But retail prices are going to drop. But consumers are going to be better off, because this will lead to lower prices," said Mr. Basker.

Wal-Mart is controversial in the United States. Shoppers applaud its low prices, but trade unions complain that it pays exceedingly low wages and keeps out unions. Others charge Wal-Mart with destroying the fabric of small towns as its big box retail centers are typically built on the fringes of urban areas and its low prices often drive established smaller competitors out of business.

Wal-Mart is growing rapidly worldwide. Its U.S. operations alone account for 10 percent of all U.S. imports from China

How many people knew that WMT's average wage was double the minimum wage? Wal-Mart's average wage is around $10 an hour, nearly double the federal minimum wage.

Military Support--Last year, Wal-Mart partnered with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation (VFW) to provide more than 900,000 Communications Kits that included free phone cards, writing paper, envelopes, and more so that servicemen and women could stay in touch with loved ones. The Company also made it possible for customers nationwide to send messages through in-store kiosks to support our military men and women. We have provided millions of dollars in financial aid to military family-support organizations and worked with manufacturers to supply clothing for the wounded and special-need items for the troops.

Wal-Mart donated $6 million to help build the World War II memorial in Washington D.C. while associates and customers raised an additional $8.5 million.

"oh my - tradition, as determined by the Catholic bishops long after the deaths of Jesus and the early apostles."

As determined by the emperor Constantine and his mother! they refused to allow any worship on the Sabbath because the evvvil JUES worshiped on the seventh day. They also incorporated many of the local pagan customs like winter solistice,Easter(fertility rites)into their version of Christianity. Look in the encyclopedia Britanica under Christmas and see what it says about its origins.
Jesus was a devout Jew and observed the Holy Days (Seven Festivals of the Lord) as the Old Testament required.

No....I take offense at the "PC" of it all. It has nothing to do with "cost savings" and everything to do with "PC". (it appears from your nastiness towards me and other posters that you are experiencing menopause go get those hormones leveled out)

Something smells like a future Snopes entry. Of course, some dolts will surly buy into this...

They are the same dolts that know how to forward emails to more people than the Democrats have on their voter roles, but can't figure out how to get to Wal-Mart, to check it out.

Perhaps as part of the "boycott", WalMart should
be renamed 'SatanMart'?

I have no idea about this email, but I was in a WalMart just today. The main Holiday/Christmas section had CHRISTMAS CAROLS playing. Not secular music, Christ-mas music.

"As determined by the emperor Constantine and his mother!"

Yes. Also, in 321, the Emperor Constantine (while he was yet worshipping the sun) decreed Sunday to be the day of rest. Constantine said, "On the venerable day of the Sun let the magistrates and people residing in cities rest, and let all workshops be closed."

The Church Council of Laodicea ordered Sunday to be kept by Christians as their sabbath in 364. During the 100s of years after that, the Inquisition was sometimes used to enforce it.

We've brought you to our "Holiday " page based on your search. The next line is "Not what you're looking for? View a list of items that match your search for "Christmas". Then the next page has this "7970 items found for “Christmas”.

Yeah. I've never seen Sam's or Wal-Mart not have "Christmas" on many displays. "Holidays" is also there, to be sure; but "Christmas" is never missing.

I had no trouble geting thousands of items to display on the web site by typing "Christmas" into 'search entire site' either.

When in conspircy mood, I bvegin to think spammers are behind this kind of thing, because people will blindly forward it to everyone they know, and NONE of them have a clue what "BCC" on their email headers is for.

That "Wal-Mart is a world wide....." paragraph didn't address the company's rationale for using "Happy Holidays" instead of Merry Christmas.

"It's a bit odd that neither Chanukah nor Kwanzaa get you to the same "Holiday" page with the same admonition."

That's not how I would have designed the page, but I can see why Walmart did it. When secular types use the word Christmas, they're looking for snowmen and reindeer and mistletoe items, not nativity scenes. Walmart wants those shoppers to find what they're looking for, so they include a link to the secular "holiday season" page. When Christians look for an actual Christmas item, we can just hit the link right below it.

Typing in Hanukkah or Kwanzaa won't lead you to the secular "holiday season" page because *no one* looking for snowmen or reindeer items would think of typing in the names of those holidays (at least not in America---maybe in Israel Hanukkah has been secularized and it's used to describe the "holiday season").

Revelation 2:14-16 Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam [a false prophet], who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. 15Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans.

There is a lot of debate about which group of people the Nicolaitans really are/were. One could as easily argue this refers to Santa worshippers/believers. Funny coincidence, too, that Santa is a jumble of the same letters in "Satan".
