I've heard the at Mecca in the pilgramage area they worship a black rock that fell, a meteorite. Anybody know the truth of this and the meaning?

I would suggest going to this site by Craig Winn, he discusses the significance of the black rock here.

The black rock predates Mohamed, as does the building. The building was a site where blood sacrifices were offered to the Arab pagan gods and goddesses. The Arab tribesmen of the region worshiped a pantheon of gods there, including Al-Lat, the sun goddess, and Al-Uzza, a goddess associated with the planet Venus, both of whom were daughters of the chief deity, known as Al-Ilah, (Allah) or "the God."

A detail missing from that account is preserved among Eastern Christians and some Muslims: the Kaaba was a meeting place for all the Arab tribes, and the idols were the cult object of pagan tribes. Christian tribes had icons in the Kaaba (of Christ and the Theotokos). Mohammed did not destroy the icons, though it is unclear whether they are still there or were returned to the Christian tribes.

Kaaba means "cube" in Arabic, I'm told. The black stone is set in one corner of the cube. As part of the hajj, each pilgrim is to circumambulate the kaaba seven times -- four times fast, three times slow. The black stone helps them know when they've made a complete circuit.

"it is believed that this rock fell from heaven as a gift from the Muslim god, Allah." Thanks for posting that picture of islam's 'black rock'.
God gave "manna" from Heaven to feed the Jews. It looks like a big, petrified turd dropped from the heavens for Islam.

The Wikipedia article supplies some useful info:
The global coordinates of the Kaaba are 21° 25' 24" N, 39° 49' 24" E.

Indeed. And the most amazing thing in all of it is that Bierce had a pretty limited formal education - especially if compared with the sordid contemporary picture. The same could be said about H. L. Mencken, albeit Mencken came later.

Did you watch "Shootout" yesterday on the History Channel? It was recommended to us in real time on this forum, and I caught the last half, then stayed up late and caught the first half. ( Note it is now late. )
The show featured "Gunny Mercer" ( Mensel? something like that ) who survived three ambushes in a few days without being hit - a patently miraculous feat. This was in Afghanistan, during operations involving MOSLEM allies. During one of many interview segments, Gunny Mercer gave an account, with due modesty, of the awe in which he was held by these allies on account of this feat. One of them told him, "Allah likes you." Gunny was visibly abashed by this praise. He hesitated to concur, but was loathe to deny it. He fumbled to the camera, "Well, I guess Allah, or whoever it is, does like me."
So tread lightly, friend!

"Did you watch "Shootout" yesterday on the History Channel?" I never watch the History Channel anymore, hey should change their name to the Revisionist Channel.
Many FReepers were posting last night about a History Channel special on the Crusades. I warned them it would be pure, anti-Christian bs, produced and aired under the ruse of providing unbiased, balanced history. I'm told it was bs, as they claimed that the Crusaders ATE the dead bodies of Moslems, certainly an old Islamic myth created to keep the hatred up for Christians.
As for your feelings about our Moslem 'friends' and 'allies', I believe they are temporary and counterfeit, and definately not trustworthy over the long run. They have either been bought or conquered by us, or for some reason they temporarily need us. Islamic history is a long and well recorded one, and they have never been the friends of Christians or the West, (or anyone else on the planet for that matter).
