Eagles Have Heard Enough: Owens Suspended Indefinitely
NBC-5 ^ | November 5, 2005

Posted on 11/05/2005 9:58:39 AM PST by NewMediaFan

Philadelphia Eagles controversial wide receiver Terrell Owens has reportedly been suspended indefinitely due to conduct deemed detrimental to the team.

Owens has also been battling a severely sprained ankle, which put his availability for this week's game in jeopardy. However, after missing Wednesday's practice, Owens was upgraded from doubtful to questionable and it appeared he would be ready to go.

According to 610 WIP in Philadelphia, though, head coach Andy Reid decided to suspend the enigmatic wideout for numerous comments he has made about the organization this week.

The radio station, however, did not report how many games Owens would miss, but it is certain that he will not play in Sunday night's key divisional contest against Washington.

Earlier in the week, Owens made comments about how the organization "lacked class" after not recognizing the fact that he caught his 100th career touchdown pass in an October 23 game against San Diego. Owens also claimed that the team's comment of allegedly forgetting about the milestone touchdown was a "blatant lie" and it insulted the receiver.

Philadelphia does not typically honor individual achievements on the scoreboard or stop the game to celebrate an accomplishment.

Then, in the same interview, Owens addressed the team's quarterback situation and stated that the Eagles would have a better record and even perhaps be undefeated if All Pro Brett Favre was under center opposed to Donovan McNabb.

However, on Friday, Owens delivered a written apology for his remarks.

"I've had the opportunity to talk with the Eagles organization, and I have learned the team does not recognize individual achievements," Owens uttered. "It has been brought to my attention that I have offended the organization and my teammates. Therefore, I would like to apologize for any derogatory comments toward them."...

Oho.. i thought after the apology they were going to let him slide.

I noticed he commented after the apology that if he was suspended it would only hurt the team.

Just reported...TO's return to the Eagles was contingent upon his making an apology to the team, and not just to the media. TO did not accept those terms.

"I would have liked to have heard Owens comments about the NBA's "bling-bling" censorship. I bet they would have been quite colorful."

Just as you state that you'd like to hear what he had to say, Ownens, just like some of the other most obnoxious of the sports gods, believes that any attention is better than no attention. And having obnoxious players that people love to hate, is, like it or not, good for revenues of their sport. And they know it.

Look at John McEnroe back in his day. People hated him, but the television ratings of those watching tennis matches when he played went to new highs. And he's still around today as a recognized personality associated with the sport years after his last match.

Just like another king jerk, Dennis Rodman. Teams got tired of him and dumped him, but for the most part he was right in his arrogant assumption that he could keep on making millions on and off the court as long as he was still able to help teams win games. And I'm pretty sure, despite having to clean up his act a bit due to the alcohol consumption catching up to him, Rodman still hasn't had to resort to a 9-5 job to pay his bills.

The Raiders would be a good fit for him.

Oh the ego clash between he and Randy would be worth the price of admission alone.

Sure and if his ankle were 100% he'd be playing Sunday regardless. It's ALL about the money. Always was, always will be.

Looks like Andy Reid is taking a page from John Gruden's book...

Yeah, how's that been working out for "boy-genius" Gruden?

Really? Being your own boss is one thing. Having a boss to whom you must report is quite another. I still haven't seen an NFL team named "Owens."

But what do I know? I'm just a lowly Browns fan.

I can't stand Owens attitude, but to say that his remarks about Brett Favre vs. D. McNabb were wrong, is somewhat (again) a case of media distortion.

If you watch the whole interview, and not just the snipit I first heard about. Owens DID NOT say, out of the blue, that he wished Favre was his quarterback. What happened was the interview quoted Michael Irving as saying that if Favre was the Eagles quarterback, they would be undefeated. The interview then asked Owens if he agreed with that statement, and Owens said "Yeah, I would probably agree with that". The way the story was portrayed that Owens was the one that said that, not that he was asked about something, someone else said. To be fair, he did go on to say some other stupid things, but once again, this is a Media inspired "quote".

Having said all of that, I am thrilled that Owens is finally getting accountability from his actions, but it shouldn't be because of this interview, (I know there is more involved). But it does make you understand why most sports stars hate talking to the media!

Dallas fan here - any way we can take TO off the Eagles' hands? Yes, I know he's a supreme jerk. But we've won with supreme jerks before and Parcells could possibly keep him in line like he usually does with Keyshawn. For all his faults, TO can catch the ball and knows what to do with it afterward. His performance in the Superbowl was excellent.

Someone should explain to this egotistical self centered jerk that football is a team game. If I were McNabb, or any other Eagle for that matter, I would refuse to play on the same team with him and force the organization to make a choice. Pittsburgh, under both coach Noll and Cower, does not put up with head cases. Owens would not be welcome in this town.

LoL!

I can't get mad at a fellow who'd say something like that.

Terrell, you're OK in my book. :D

As a Giants fan, I vote that TO go to the Raiders, or anywhere out of the NFC East.
