In addition, my co-author, Mike Allen, has a NEH grant proposal in right now to develop a full curriculum based on PHUSA.
"A Patriot's History of the United States." Course, neo-Confederates don't like it because we praise Lincoln.
OK, tell me this. My 11th grader -- I am tutoring American History with her/ and English as a second language -- 'all of my classmates thnk Andrew Jackson was a terrible President. Is that true?"
I talked about textbook authors' worldviews, 'let's look at some other sources.' Any good feedback re Jackson from someone who knows??

Schools tend to reflect their communities. It is no big surprise that schools in L.A. & N.Y.C. are full of liberals - so are those cities.
On the other hand, in the faculty parking lot where I teach, the most prominent bumper stickers are of the "Support our troops" and "Bush-Cheney 04" types, because that's the type of community we are.
Government grew during his two terms, both absolutely and per capita. He did nothing to cut government, but did attack the PRIVATE Bank of the United States. His manners were boorish, his political party devoid of principles, and whether he liked or disliked slavery personally, his party established a "gag" rule over all slavery debate in Congress during his tenure. I can draw a STRAIGHT LINE from him to the modern nanny-state, big-government Dems.
Check our sources in the book for other views, but THE Jackson authority (with whom I disagree) is Robert Remini. When I would bring up these points at a conference, Remini would just ignore them, and go into his hero-worship. I swear, RR even LOOKS like Andrew Jackson now!
INTREP
Well is that all? At least he wasn't compelling them to have anal sex, like many others in his profession. /sarc
LS, I thank you so much. Will print this off for my tutee -- re Andrew Jackson, that is.
You have Bush bumper stickers galore? and Support our Troops?? I am SO jealous.
Hey, don't get me wrong. This is much to admire about AJ. He was tough as nails and was courageous. He was never personally corrupt. But I don't think he was that smart, and he was inordinately stubborn. But the man was a patriot.
Thanks, tho, I appreciate your input. It's always good to see two sides of the same story. Gives that nice perspective. Altho the (mud-caked) celebrations at his inauguration sound like the Clintoons cleaning out the WH as they left.
Yeah, one thing we wrote that makes me smile was that Jackson opened the WH to the mob, which emptied the liquor cabinets, while AJ himself was at a swank restaurant having a steak!
I agree. PIG is a sample, Patriot's is a feast. Your book has much more meat to it.
I picked up both of them at the same time.
Some of you may be interested in this relatively new web site, the "Education Intelligence Agency" .
that is an excellent site, I haven't gone through a lot of it, but I found their interception of an internal NEA survey to be very interesting:

Wow, although not very surprising. I haven't had time to plow through the site yet, either; I just got the link today from a former member of the ping list.
