Scrabble Rules - Permitted Words - Any words listed in a standard dictionary are permitted except those only spelled with an initial capital letter, abbreviations, prefixes and suffixes and words requiring apostrophes and hyphens. Foreign words in a standard English dicionary are considered to have been absorbed into the English language and are allowed.

Why is negro not allowed?

When I was a child growing up in the South the word Negro was used (pronounced nee'-gro) and when it was written it was always capitalized. The capitalization would keep it from being a permitted word in Scrabble.
