Now, personally, I don't find any particular word to be offensive and I don't support banning any words from TV,radio or schools but since such a large portion of the population finds certain words offensive I usually avoid using them to be polite.
"Because "black" is not archaic and "African American" is not fully accepted. "Negro", on the other hand has become archaic - it was too close to a word that was offensive and thus has become outdated."
And "colored people," as in NAACP? How does that fit into "The White Man's Guide To Addressing Minorities?"
Whoops! Better change the name of the United Negro College Fund too.

My grandmother referred to blacks as "colored people." I always pictured a bunch of people sitting around with coloring books!
Most Puerto Ricans and Dominicans are part black, so I assume that your father in law is of African ancestry.
I have to agree with you.
I get tired of liberals changing the rules as to what words mean and who is allowed to use them.
If there is clear proof for how liberalism has created Aldus Huxley's Brave New World in our culture, political correctness is it.
The trouble with the termAA is that is applying a geographic designation to a term meaning a racial designation.
There was some news awhile back of a white kid from South Africa that moved to the United States and people laughed when he said he was african american and the "blacks" where up in arms over his comments. They said you cannot be white and be AA.
And the NAACP still uses "Colored People".
But as with all rules and liberals, they set them for everyone and make exceptions for themselves, but not for those they hate.
Then they tell everyone foolish enough to listen they're "inclusive" and "tolerant".
Liberalism requires living in Bizarro World, where everything has opposite meanings from reality.

Personally, I find it offensive that people are offended by words. I was brought up when the old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me"
was popular. I still believe we should accept the simple truth of it and not worry about someone's self esteem being damaged. Self esteem is only meaningful if it ie earned by some form of accomplishment, just not hearing hurtful words cannot really give someone self esteem that will serve them in life.
