Texas death row inmate escapes from Houston jail

HOUSTON -- A Texas death row inmate, disguised in civilian clothing, escaped late Thursday from the Harris County Jail.

Charles Victor Thompson, 35, of Tomball, was in Houston after being re-sentenced last week to execution.

"Apparently he fooled somebody into thinking he had some reason for being there, and they let him out," said Sheriff's Office Lt. John Martin.

Further details on the escape were under investigation, Martin said in a story in the online edition of the Houston Chronicle.

Thompson had been expected to be returned to the Texas prison system within 45 days, according to Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons.

Thompson was condemned for the 1998 shooting deaths of his ex-girlfriend, Dennise Hayslip, 39, of Tomball, and her new boyfriend, Darren Keith Cain, 30, of Spring.

The night before officers had been called to the same address and had escorted Thompson away from the residence. Thompson returned early the next morning and kicked the door in. Thompson shot the male, causing his death, and injuring the female severely enough to require life flight to the hospital. She died one week later, as a result of the shooting.
