Senate Approves Cuts to Social Programs (Cutting $36B in Spending!)
Fox News ^ | November 03, 2005 | AP

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Thursday narrowly approved the first cuts since 1997 to benefit programs such as Medicare (search), Medicaid (search) and farm subsidies, giving Republicans a symbolic victory against ever-rising government spending.

The bill, passed by a 52-47 vote, would make modest cuts to the health care programs for the elderly, poor and disabled, but leave the food stamp program untouched.

The measure also would permit exploratory oil drilling in an Alaskan wilderness (search) area.

The spending battle now heads to the House, where Republicans are divided over whether to cut more deeply across a broader range of social programs.

And don't forget the oriental garden for the new CDC visitor's center...

You know...they have created "nonpartisan" Base Closure Commissions for making difficult decisions that elected officials lack the 'nads to make. I wonder if the President could appoint a "nonpartisan" commission to decide which spending to accept. Veto everything else! It could provide political cover to everyone involved (they really are cowards!)

There is precedent of this working on the Military Base Closures.....

I think the reason Bush doesn't veto is not because he's not conservative enough, but because he's just a nice guy. Ever heard him speak badly of ANYONE but a terrorist?

He won't veto this.

are these cuts actual cuts, or simply "not as big a spree as projected"-cuts?

If we do that, why bother to elect Senators and Congresscritters at all?

Finally, the republicans have gotten the message...we hope!

LOL..it just so happens I was called by the RNC this afternoon for what she called an "Emergency Donation Request" of $100 or more.

I told her "not a dime as long as this bunch spends worse than democrats".

Looks like it's working already :)

Stop voting for anyone who votes for a bill with pork in it.

Are there any bills that are kosher?

"giving Republicans a symbolic victory against ever-rising government spending."

If it was a democrat-controlled congress and presidency that was doing all of the spending in the first place, this would be a symbolic victory. When republicans are the ones doing the spending, a 36 Billion dollar cut in spending is an insult to our intelligence.
