ON the surface, the support offered to Islamist fanatics by Western intellectuals appears baffling: Those privileged to speak out in safety are cheering on men who would gladly cut their throats.
The reason goes back to the maxim that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

The Domestic and the International Left hate Bush and America more than they do her enemies.
Same thing happened during the Cold War.
Leftist intellectuals love slavery. Of course, they don't want to be the slaves themselves. But they love the existence of slavery.
As long as slavery exits in the world (as the slavery of women in Islam or the slavery of subject peoples in Africa [blacks owned by Arabs] or the slavery of anyone who wants to earn an honest living instead of being a Jihad fighter) the leftist intellectuals can write countless NY Times bestsellers explaining the importance of us all getting along with the world's slave-masters. And the anthropologist-leftist can have whole careers studying the slave populations and writing countless learned papers about how happy all the slaves are.
And of course, through it all, are the cocktail parties and university lectures, where they all get together and tell each other how clever and brilliant they are, and how dull and stupid the American public is (and of course, the American Chimp President), and they have expensive cheese with their expensive wines and toast the slave-masters and smile in condecension at any who accuse them of supporting slavery.
And the funny thing is, many of these slavery-loving intellectuals are black. Koffi, for example.
What's so unusual about that? Hell, whites never had a monopoly on slavery.
I know. Of course, you're right. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
And the frustrating thing is that today's abolitionists don't even get to call themselves abolitionists and don't have any hope of succeeding.
In the 1850s, a large segment of the western intelligencia was writing and preaching against the evils of slavery. Today, the MSM won't cover it, the universities won't acknowledge it, and the UN is actively promoting it.
It's the entire rationale behind the so-called idea, and inevitable downfall, of socialism; "We could all be equal... if only I were in charge."
"We could all be equal... if only I were in charge."Exactly. Communism has failed 5000 times, but this time we can make it work.
The funny thing is, the Islamofacists aren't really leftists, but a different sort of animal all together. But the Islamofacists do hate Christianity, they do hate free enterprise, they do hate free speech, and they do practise slavery... so the leftists adore the Islamofacists.
Since the leftists lost their Soviet Commie God, they've been willing to embrace whatever slave-master is handy.
I don't think most so called intellectuals consider Islam a threat. They think that these people are motivated by power, poverty, etc. They believe that we can compromise with them, and gradually turn them into good world citizens. Since the great majority of them are atheists or deists they are incapable of making the emotional connection of people acting based on religious faith, which in the end is the primary motivation of the Islamists. They worship Reason and believe that in the end it will overcome faith in God. The result is they believe that we can talk and compromise with people such as Bin Laden. Sadly I don't think they'll understand otherwise until a few of their heads roll off the end of some Muslim's sword.
And the media seems to have not a care that one of their own, Daniel Pearl was beheaded in a senseless act of barbarity.
You are probably right. Familiarity with Rodney Stark's work might disabuse a few of them, both most of them will probably go to their graves without realizing how far from reality their Enlightenment delusions have taken them!
