Reid 'Disappointed' Over Alito Pick
NewsMax ^ | Oct 31, 2005

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid issued the following statement regarding the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the United States Supreme Court.

"The nomination of Judge Alito requires an especially long hard look by the Senate because of what happened last week to Harriet Miers. Conservative activists forced Miers to withdraw from consideration for this same Supreme Court seat because she was not radical enough for them. Now the Senate needs to find out if the man replacing Miers is too radical for the American people.

"I am disappointed in this choice for several reasons. First, unlike previous nominations, this one was not the product of consultation with Senate Democrats. Last Friday, Senator Leahy and I wrote to President Bush urging him to work with us to find a consensus nominee. The President has rejected that approach.

"Second, this appointment ignores the value of diverse backgrounds and perspectives on the Supreme Court. The President has chosen a man to replace Sandra Day O’Connor, one of only two women on the Court. For the third time, he has declined to make history by nominating the first Hispanic to the Court. And he has chosen yet another federal appellate judge to join a court that already has eight justices with that narrow background. President Bush would leave the Supreme Court looking less like America and more like an old boys club.

"Justice O’Connor has been the deciding vote in key cases protecting individual rights and freedoms on a narrowly divided Court. The stakes in selecting her replacement are high.

"I look forward to meeting Judge Alito and learning why those who want to pack the Court with judicial activists are so much more enthusiastic about him than they were about Harriet Miers.”

but would we really consider someone qualified for the Presidency if they had no previous experience in the political arena?

Three words: Dwight David Eisenhower.

You're correct. Our guys don't even vote "no" on Democrat judicial nominations, let alone filibuster them.

We managed only 3 votes against Ginzburg, and she was a radical lefty replacing a sensible judge (White).

The Rats produced 22 votes against Roberts even though his nomination wasn't altering the so-called balance on the court at all. If he'd been replacing O'Connor, nearly every Rat would have voted "no".

The whining we're hearing this morning from Reid, Schumer, and their ilk proves what a lot of us were saying all along, namely that the Rats are afraid of a fight and were using their bullying and bloviating to intimidate the Republicans into backing down. As the Miers nomination showed, it almost worked.

What a situation that was. The Rats feared a fight because they knew public opinion would be against them. So they talked big and threatened to do all kinds of awful things if we put up a good nominee. Our guys feared a fight because they were intimidated by the Rats' tough talk and backed down, giving the Rats exactly what they wanted (a wishy-washy nominee with no firm mooring who allowed the Rats to avoid the fight they never wished to have).

Luckily, a lot of conservatives balked, and now we have "Scalito"!

He has passed the leftist test and that's good enough for me. If a Dingy Harry, Swimmer, Turban, Sheets or other leftist dinosaur doesn't like him, he must be good.

Now the Senate needs to find out if the man replacing Miers is too radical for the American people.

Too radical for Harry Reid means this judge may vote to uphold private property rights that were devastated in Kelo, and too radical also means voting against a UMichigan quota system that the Democrat appointed judges are for. Who's the radicals?

This is what conservatives wanted: The Dems digging in and getting nasty. Now we need the GOP to be strong and unitied.

Senator Reid, if you don't think this is a good pick, vote Nay on the floor. That's your Advise and Consent role.

Did Clinton consult with Senate Repubs on Bader-Ginsburg??
(I'm almost afraid to ask that question.)

It's reassuring to realize that gasbag Reid will sit in judgment with an open mind.

McCain was on @nus in the morning and seemed to support Alito but was going to see how he did in the hearing. It certainly didn't sound like he thought the RINOs on gang of 14 would automatically object.

We'll see what McCain has to say later on after the 14 meeting today.

Dingy Harry also called upon Rove to resign today and for the President and Cheney to publicly apologize for the Libby debacle. Old Dingy will now have a cow what with Alito in the picture. Will the RINOS support the man or not, is the key question?? McLame seems to be doubting that possibility. Will the Gang of 14 do anything right? Will we see an up and down vote in the Senate? The MSM will now go wild again and get it wrong, of course. No veto for Alito!

The Demo senators would probably have no problem with either choice if he could show a law degree from an on-line "degree-in-6-weeks" university.

As usual the dims are transferring their agenda.

They are the ones wanting activist judges.

Schumer called Alito a 'radical'.

How in the world can a constitutionalist be called a radical?

In the bizzaro world of dims of course.

As I recall Bush nominated Miguel Estrada from Honduras a Hispanic and the Democrats filibustered him. Hypocrites all!!

There is no legal requirement that an engineering firm hire someone who actually has an engineering background, but very few would consider such a person qualified.

http://www.nspe.org/lc1-why.asp
But, that being said, you are right that an engineering firm can hire anybody - but they would be limited in their legal authority to stand behind their work product.

The "Constitutional qualifications" argument is a piece of childish sophistry - nothing more than a diversion from the terrain where the serious debate lies.

Methinks the President did consult with you and Leaky Leahy, Senator Reid. I believe he said: "Go pound sand."
