Births to Unmarried U.S. Women Set Record

WASHINGTON - Nearly 1.5 million babies, a record, were born to unmarried women in the United States last year, the government reported Friday. And it isn't just teenagers any more. ADVERTISEMENT [0]

"People have the impression that teens and unmarried mothers are synonymous," said Stephanie Ventura of the National Center for Health Statistics.

But last year teens accounted for just 24 percent of unwed births, down from 50 percent in 1970, she commented.

The increases in unmarried births have been among women in their 20s, she said, particularly those 25 to 29.

You are way out of line. It's absolute positions like yours that make freerepublic a worse place than it should be.

How is he out of line? I won't be surprised if in a few years illegitimacy becomes "the norm" and the married folks are the freaks, enabled by the mushy, timid, spineless creatures who can quote one whole line from the Bible. Preventing a woman from facing social disapproval is a whole lot different than preventing her from being stoned. What's more, the nonjudgemental attitude leaves the womanizing philanderers, who are already buoyed by popular worship of the Playboy, in an even stronger position.

Please, give me a break....

The headline could have said..."1.5 million babies were not aborted last year because the mothers were not married.

You're right, shame on the woman for getting pregnant by herself.

That means there is an increase in unmarried fathers as well.

. . . I have backed into this subject before on FR, and had to deal with serious hysterical incoming . . .

Happened again, didn't it? The problem is that the topic hits too close to home. The Sexual Revolution was not confined to lefties. Those who subscribe (consciously or uconsciously) to its tenets get very defensive when faced with the evidence against their behavior--especially the evidence that illegitimate kids have a much, much harder time in life than children who grow up with two married parents.

You're right, shame on the woman for getting pregnant by herself.

That's an incredibly dishonest comment, and not a little self-righteous. Didn't you see my slam against the "players" of male culture?

Does the term "cover girl" mean anything to you?

The only area where a contemporary man would be benefitted by marriage is if he ABSOLUTELY desires children.

Married men have no meaningful claim on their children, assets, or future income. If you desire children you should adopt them or have them outside the country. Otherwise, there are plenty of kids who need mentors through either the church or secular organizations.

Great link. I agree with it. We should stop talking about parental "rights" and instead talk of parental obligations.

Since when is the truth dishonest? Your slam at the players started because of your perception of the wicked ways of easy women.

What's more, the nonjudgemental attitude leaves the womanizing philanderers, who are already buoyed by popular worship of the Playboy, in an even stronger position.

So it's the womans fault there are philandering men who read playboy? Is that what you said? And you're off the subject. The subject is 1.5 million babies were not aborted last year. I haven't seen anyone saying good for them, they chose life over death. Instead the children were called bastards, like it's their choice.

It's absolute positions like yours

And pray tell, what would those absolute positions be?

so because married men live longer than single men, and because married women dont that somehow equates to that it's more beneficial for men?

please cite the exact studies you are quoting.
you're going to make your argument on the basis of lifespan?

so women should stay single because they'll live longer...makes "sense"

You do not know how to read, think or respond.

And some people, even if they're parents were married, are still bastards.

"However, there are many of us out here who understand that marriage is not for them. Not because we are trying to promote some"liberal-socialist"agenda but because we have never met anyone who has even COME CLOSE to sharing our hopes, dreams and vision."

Friend, I wasn't talking about that aspect at all. And, I hope you come across the right person soon.

"It's absolute positions like yours that make freerepublic a worse place than it should be."

Gee...that's kindof absolutist and inflexible, don't you think?

I am not "way out of line" on most things. But some things, by definition, cannot be compromised on or negotiated, because to do so is to give up your belief. The best example of that (and I hesitate to mention it, because this thread is not about abortion, even though some people think it is)...is abortion. I am against it. I don't parse it. It's wrong.

It's about a 1.5 million alternative to abortion. Which appears something you don't want to admit. In a perfect world all children would be born with a married mother and father, sadly, we don't live in a perfect world, and calling the innocents bastards is harsh.

Sooooo, you would rather that 1.5 million more babies were aborted than born with the stain of legitimacy upon them?
