Based on the admittedly very limited info released so far, were I on the jury I'd be ticked at Libby for appearing to mislead What's more, the perjury charge is apparently based *only* on Libby's answer to a grand jury question.

We are enabling selective prosecution with that attitude. Only after the left has been convicted of the stuff they do.
Otherwise we look worse for less given the 'conviction rate'

Although, this creates a situation where anyone can lob crap at the Administration from the cover of their (or their spouse's or friend's) CIA status.Which is exactly what has happened in this case.
To: McGruff
Didn't Joe Wilson also reveal her identity in an interview? And was this before Libby knew it?
To: demkicker
Fitzgerald hasn't even thought about whether any of this impedes Libby's chance to a fair trial???????????

He spent 2 years finding out less than we did here at FR in 2 weeks. I say he's not only incompetent but a sanctimonious prig.

I don't think he's dumb either. I think he knew right away that Valerie Plame's role in this thing was extremely important information that he needed to get into the press somehow. He was fighting a media shitstorm that was saying Cheney sent Wilson to Niger and then ignored his report and covered it up. He had to fight that somehow. What better ammunition than the truth - that Wilson wasn't sent by Cheney, but by his own wife??? I'm guessing Libby thought for sure that some enterprising reporter would find this as important as he did and would start digging on the real reason Wilson was sent. He knew Plame wasn't covert under the law and so he could not be prosecuted for telling reporters about her.
I'm also not convinced that Libby did lie to the GJ. Why would he? Why not just say "I can't recall who first told me about Plame" and "I'm not sure who the first reporter was that I talked to, I talked to 100 of them during that time because all of them wanted comment on Wilson's claim that VP Cheney sent him." He could easily have avoided perjury and obstruction charges by just saying he couldn't recall. He insisted under repeated questioning by Fitz that he was telling the truth. Maybe he was! And maybe Mr. Mandy Grunwald wasn't. Which one would have the biggest motive to lie to the grand jury?

You make a good point. We should not be making excuses for Libby if indeed he lied to this Grand Jury. If it was wrong for Slicky Will to commit perjury, then it's wrong for our side. If it is proven that Libby lied then he should pay for it with jail time!

Will this press conference end before the actual trial is over? This thing is going on, and on, and on, like some guy who lost his voice for 2 years that miraculously came back. It's as if he's trying to blurt out anything he's been wanting to say in 2 years into one hour.....and counting.
