You're not wrong.
But the deal is, conservatives trashed the call to trust the President. Instead, they trusted Coulter and others when they said, "Trust ME -- Owen, Luttig, McConnell -- they're all better."

"Miers was done in by executive privilege. Had it not been for that, she'd still be the frontrunner."
You and I both know that is NOT true. That was the excuse that was used but she's had a fork in her for days now because she was "done" a week ago. Having said that, I'm glad that she withdrew. The Prez, bless his heart, needs to keep his promise to nominate a Conservative of the ilk of Scalia and Thomas.
There is a story today about how she handled the mock hearings. By all accounts, she did terribly and outsiders were not even allowed in for fear of embarassment. Does this not bother you in terms of how she might have done on the floor of the Senate?
He ignores that that is what Clinton did. The difference was that the Republicans were willing to defer to him even when he picked two liberals for the Court.
To get elected, Bush promised us a Scalea or Thomas. He subsequently promised the most qualified individual.
He broke his promises, and nominated a potential Souter.
As a result of these misjudgments, the nomination failed.
This is fun. Liberals' heads are spinning that conservatives actually won the day on this. They thought they had us on the ropes. They thought we were in disarray and disillusioned. They thought all of our heroes are going down and so will we.
THEY WERE WRONG.
Excellent post, my friend, excellent.
We don't need to plead anything to a whining minority and their co-consirators in the MSM. Our conservative elected majority needs to grow a spine, bring the nuclear option, and tell the MINORITY party to shut up and vote - up or down. Let the chips fall where they may - and let those RINO's (McCain, Spectre & company) who would vote against their President's nominee answer to their constituents during the next election.
Let's keep saying it until we believe it. We all know that was a smoke screen for getting rid of a big mistake made by The Prez. Nevertheless, it worked; thank God.
If you can't hang with the big dogs.......get off of the porch!
If President Bush nominates a conservative that is as obviously qualified as John Roberts, he will get the same result he got with Roberts. There are numerous experienced Circuit Court judges that were not filibustered and will impress the country in hearings just as much as Judge Roberts did. Alito, Luttig, McConnell, Batchelder, Boggs, Jones....it's a big list. Just pick one.
<< To get elected, Bush promised us a Scalea or Thomas. He subsequently promised the most qualified individual.

No, you're dead-wrong. In fact, as far as you or I know, he broke none of his promises. He didn't promise a nominee YOU (or I, for that matter) would approve of.
Problem is, now we'll never know. Or one problem, at least.
Dan
But it was neither gauche nor inappropriate for conservatives to demand that Miers clarify her views on a slew of issues, notably Roe v. Wade.
Conservatives didn't demand clarity on Miers' view of Roe; they (or at least most of us) assessed her track record and writings as unimpressive and not particularly conservative.
Lies aside, the undertone of this piece is instructive. Dionne is a good indicator of leftist thought, and he's not happy. Noooot happy. My take is that the Democrats were pretty sure they had another Souter coming down the pike at the hands of their hapless opponents. Suddenly, that rug has been yanked out from under them. What to do?
The first, obvious thing for the leftists to do is spin this as a disaster for Bush and for conservatives. How can the Administration mitigate this disaster? Glad you asked. By nominating a consensus, "centrist" candidate -- Hillary is singing this very song today.
But what if it goes this way:
1) Bush nominates a solid conservative with a deep background and proven track record.Shall we?2) Leftists shriek of wrongness and betrayal.
3) RINOs make unhappy noises.
4) Conservatives launch a massive nationwide effort targeting RINO Senators who are up for re-election, explaining to them why supporting the nominee is in their best political interests.
5) Leftists shriek about hatefulness and fascism.
6) After much sound and fury, most RINOs decide not to completely tick off their party, their president AND their base, and the nominee is confirmed with 2 or 3 votes to spare.
7) Leftists emit sounds audible only to dogs.
8) We read E. J. Dionne's post-confirmation article about how this really isn't a victory for the Administration or conservatives, since they didn't even get all the votes of their own party, and smile quietly to ourselves.
McCain-Feingold.
Immigration.
Pork-barrel spending.
Unused veto.
Medicare expansion.
Having been burned often enough on key issues, conservatives were hard-pressed to trust Bush on someone who looked rather unlike whom they would choose to place their trust in.
Conservatives will trust - but not blindly.
So, would you include your friend, Senator Brownback, as being among the "rapists" for publicly expressing his doubts and for insisting on access to documents that are covered by executive privilege?
Since when do Republicans emulate "what democrats Do" ?
Necer I hope.
I left out 9) Conservatives relentlessly punish those RINO Senators who failed to support the nomination.
Without the executive privilege deal, Miers would still be the frontrunner. Too many people don't understand the character of the President and his people. He would have stuck by her just like he stuck by all those other judges. She would have pressed on until she's either confirmed or rejected in Senate.
Either way, this is a win/win for us. We don't p!$$ of nonhardcore conservatives/republicans and the Left doesn't get a propaganda tool; saying that Bush withdrew because of the "evil right" would be a lie, per usual from the Left.
