This 1993 speech has stopped my waffeling between "wait and see and against".

Put me "all in" as an anti-Miers unappeasable.
Oh, you mean like millions of Americans have been doing about the borders for some years now?
Read the speech link in #21.
Sounds to the left of Souter to me.
Hi, I'm ____________, and I was a Miers Lover.
LVM
Yes, the dark world of slithering malcontents and unappeasables, troll like creatures, all desperately trying to undermine the President.
You forgot elitist, sexist, cynics in a snit.
I agree, as a very conservative prolife evangelical conservative, I've been supportive of the Miers nomination because I support President Bush in this time of war and I think it's time for a conservative evangelical on the Supreme Court. However, now I am very concern about what she said about abortion in the 1993 speech, and I will not support someone who is pro-choice or pro-abortion.
So what is your position? No change after reviewing the evidence?
Suppose you are Senator Petronski. How do you vote on confirmation?
Yes, there is a big difference. I put myself in LS's camp for the reasons that he has. I'm a lawyer and had to deal with the nonsense about glass ceilings and all of that, BUT, even though I was a dem at the time, I saw affirmative action as dumb and destructive and I could not have been more opposed to IOLTA. I would never have supported bringing Gloria Steinam to speak to anyone. I've just had it with this wishy-washy woman. Bleh!
President Bush should have called you first!
I'm a "no" vote now. I can't imagine being shaken from that, but I won't rule it out.
Me as well, but I am trying to learn as much as possible. Without devoting significant time to it, that is. That's why I'm lazy and hope others have done more research.
Maybe those that support Meirs, by stating she brought forward Roberts, should think that maybe they will both turn the court leftward?...That is frightening. IOW, we are really in a situation of trust with the first pick, the second should be someone that is a high likelihood of being a strict constructionist.
I just welcomed another to the dissendence movement, but as I told that individual, there is no pleasure for me on this side of the aisle nor likely for you. It is no fun to stand before someone I have respected prior and yell, "STOP".
As unfortunate luck would have it, I've had the same position about her chances of confirmation. I'm choosing to fight the odds, though I know the D.C. mindset is more prone towards telling it's constituents to hush than respecting their concerns and wishes.
For someone who doesn't follow all the Miers threads, could you more specifically tell me what she has said/written that trouble you? I'm not leaning "yea" or "nay" with the question, just asking the question.
What makes you think she is not pro-life, anti-immigration, anti-affirmative action, etc? How long ago is the citations you are going by and is there a chance these statements might have been used out of context or so long ago that they are generally useless (i.e. Bill Bennett and Rush Limbaugh quotes that the left has routinely distorted)?
It took me a while to make up my mind, too.
The diversity and affirmative action evidence was what made me decide.
As to what happens from here, I am hopeful that such converts to opposition as Ed Whalen will begin to turn the tide, and that the President will get tough talking advice from someone he trusts on the inside, and so, Miers will withdraw her name.
If this happens, I think the next nominee will have stellar credentials, and be fairly firmly conservative, but will not, alas, be my favorite, JRB.
I admire your honest and humble change of heart.
Hope your book sales are going well!
Cheers,
Richard F.
I wonder who W would have picked if we didn't have a bunch of RINO's in the Senate (Frist, Graham, Snow, Collins, McCain etc.)that would pee in their panties if he would have nominated Luttig or someone on the righter than right?
I wonder...
