Unfortunately if the indictments are on pheripheral issues like perjury, suborning perjury, obstruction, lying to an FBI agent, or some such side issue, the judge wont allow the kind of trial you are interested in. It will focus on did so and so lie, did so and so attempt to get someone else to lie, etc. Having a good reason to have taken the action that you lied about is no defense and will be shut down.

Also, discovery phase is really something that occurs in civil trials. In a criminal trial, the prosecutor has to turn over evidence against the defendent and anything they found that would exonerate him but there is no additional discovery other than what the lawyer is able to uncover on his own among willing witnesses. No one has to talk to him. Yeah they can subpoena the witness to testify but they have to show cause and again if it doesnt apply against the narrow issue of the indictment, the judge will not allow. I think you are overly optiimistic about turning this into a show trial.
