I was going to write the exact same thing. My son and his buddy were to fly out Friday from Cancun. Yesterday they humped it to Merida and are now flying from there to Mexico City and then back to the states.
Maybe Kevin should learn to think out of the box instead of sitting and waiting for someone to rescue him.
Why anyone would go to Mexico on vacation is beyond me. I've been there on business many times (unfortunately). It's a third world dump. Just like Venezuela. And the food is horrible.
And people wonder why some stayed in NOLA for Katrina and Rita. Some of these tourists stayed because they had "never been in a hurricane before".
Gee, what fun.
Now they know why most people, when given a chance to evacuate, take it. And, when you have a chance to eavcuate before a hurricane strikes Mexico, you REALLY want to take it.
Yup. Have to duct tape your mouth shut taking a shower; and brush your teeth with bottled water.
Silly me, I had a martini on the rocks. Talk about getting sick! Sweats, and "the runs." IBM wanted me to stay six more weeks... nope. I worked remotely from home.
Most tourists get lucky...the unfortunate few are robbed and raped or simply disappear....
Now that's my idea of a relaxing vacation....
Let's get a little perspective here. These stranded tourists will eventually get home. After a period of recovery from this traumatic experience, they'll continue their lives in peace and comfort.
When they someday recount the hardships they suffered through during this vacation, I wonder how many of them will give a passing thought to the local population that will be living with the aftermath of this storm for many years to come?
MEXICO CITY, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Tourism revenues, Mexico's third most important source of foreign currency, rose more than 15 percent in the first eight months of the year.
The Tourism Ministry said on Wednesday tourism raked in $8.4 billion from January to August, an increase of 15.3 percent from the same period last year.
More than 15 million foreigners, primarily Americans and Canadians visited Mexico in the period, 10 percent more than in January to August 2004.
Dolts Stuck On Stoooopid.
We do exhaustive research before vacation travel. Have never been disappointed.
You are so right. Be proud of that young man. He didn't wait around for someone to help him, he used his head and helped himself.
Unfortunately I went with 3 other people who planned it. Also it was a package deal (airfare and hotel). Never again...learned my lesson.
However, I will say that the water is beautiful and the sand is pure white at Cancun (tourist hotel area anyway). But you can't stay at the beach forever.
Generally, the hotel staff tried to ignore you (pretend they were busy) only interested in tips, and complained to each other all the time.
Try Club Med at Turks and Cacoas. Aside from Luzerne Switzerland, it was the best vacation we've had. Lots of activities for the kids too.
Thanks for the tips. I've been to Switzerland twice and loved it both times. Lived in Rome for 15 months for work.
My favorite is Australia.
Those Marriott Hotel points paid for 80% of the trip!
And the tourists stuck there have resorted to canibalism
I also went to the Great Barrier Reef and did some snorkeling at Carnes (spelling). It was great.
Went I went, the exchange rate meant $200 hotel rooms for $100. Like you, I stayed in great hotels. Also true for New Zealand.
Just like they do here! Amazing!
Oh, but in addition, while being here and working here illegally, they are agitating for a "living wage." DON'T get me started!
The SENSIBLE thing to do ... Lots of bus lines and trains in Mexico, all connecting to El Norte.
Only quoting how it was...if that offends you, sorry. Has nothing to do with them being Mexicans from their own country for heaven's sake. I was the tourist in their country.
But I'd say that about anyone who purposely tried to get out of work that way. Laziness comes in all colors and ethnicities.
