Hurricane Wilma Live Thread, Part III (TS Alpha gets honorable mention too)
NHC - NOAA ^ | 22 October 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 10/22/2005 1:25:10 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Hurricane Wilma slowly drifts toward the Southeast Gulf of Mexico after relentlessly pounding Cozumel and Cancun for more than 24 hours. Early reports indicate extensive wind and flood damage to Mexico's resort-studded Mayan Riviera. Mexican officials said about 20,000 tourists were at shelters and hotels on the mainland south of Cancun and an estimated 10,000-12,000 were in Cancun itself. About 50 hotels were evacuated.

In preparation for Hurricane Wilma's anticipated Florida landfall, a Hurricane Watch and mandatory evacuation have been issued for the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. Mandatory evacuations for Marco Island and much of Naples are in effect, as well as high surf advisories and high risk of rip currents along Florida's panhandle and Big Bend coasts. Bus services are available for Monroe Co. and other counties for residents who do not have transportation. Additional storm watches for the Florida peninsula are expected later today.

The 2005 hurricane season altered the record books again today with the formation of Tropical Storm Alpha south of Hispanola. Preliminary forecasts indicate TS Alpha will not affect the U.S. mainland.

Laz,

Do me a favor and look at this link (it's big and takes time to load) and tell me if that front that was supposed to come down and turn her right doesn't seem to dissapate a bit toward the end of the loop.

"I swear these are the longest NHC advisories in their history."

It's a record-breaking year for even the advisories!

"Silly...that storm would track directly to Mobile, AL."

"It would be appropriately named Blam Blam."

Nope, too cold here. We have a forecast of 37 degrees Monday morning...that's five degrees from freezing, folks.

I'm on dial-up and they have been working on my phone lines since Katrina. There's so much noise, static, humming etc that I've been trying to get on-line since 4:00pm and I just made it.

Local news just suggested we make a last sweep of the property for loose objects tonight. Be back in a bit.

It does seem to dissipate. But they're still expecting her to turn and start moving toward us soon.

I've been watching the visible floater all day, and for the past few hours, she's already been shifting NNE, even though they keep saying her movement is to the north. It looks like a drift in anticipation of the actual turn.

"Update from The Weather Channel: The resort town of Playa del Carmen has been destroyed."

Geez...I used to take the ferry across from Cozumel and make landing there and drive on inland and do my own archaeological searches...lots and lots of undiscovered stuff on the Yucatan.

Might be a lot of new, old stuff get washed up on this. You might want to consider going back down there the first chance you get.

She's 9.7 miles NE of the projected (1000 Saturday) 2200 point, a few mph low on sustained winds, and less than 2.2 miles off the course track.

Accelerating a bit now, come 1000 Sunday, she'll turn onto her projected base course, really speed up, and tomorrow by ten pm, she'll be up near top speed. Supposed to pick up another 5 knots by 1000 tomorrow too.

Here we go.
