Hurricane Wilma slowly drifts toward the Southeast Gulf of Mexico after relentlessly pounding Cozumel and Cancun for more than 24 hours. Early reports indicate extensive wind and flood damage to Mexico's resort-studded Mayan Riviera. Mexican officials said about 20,000 tourists were at shelters and hotels on the mainland south of Cancun and an estimated 10,000-12,000 were in Cancun itself. About 50 hotels were evacuated.
In preparation for Hurricane Wilma's anticipated Florida landfall, a Hurricane Watch and mandatory evacuation have been issued for the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. Mandatory evacuations for Marco Island and much of Naples are in effect, as well as high surf advisories and high risk of rip currents along Florida's panhandle and Big Bend coasts. Bus services are available for Monroe Co. and other counties for residents who do not have transportation. Additional storm watches for the Florida peninsula are expected later today.
The 2005 hurricane season altered the record books again today with the formation of Tropical Storm Alpha south of Hispanola. Preliminary forecasts indicate TS Alpha will not affect the U.S. mainland.

As if the tornadoes weren't bad enough. Wilma's been a very bad girl.
I've been listening to our local cable Channel 13- the weather guy has been giving an excellent tutorial- I'm very impressed.
Greta is in Naples- looks like Marco is really going to get hit hard. Lot of people haven't evacuated.
149 southwest of Key West
She must be pickingh up some forward spped
Was 170 southwest just less than an hour ago
Just went out on my upstairs deck, estimating 50-60- mph suystained with gusts up to 70 or more
Infrared radar looks like it may be strengthening a bit too.
OH Well
I won't be sleeping tonight. I'll give you all the blow by blow descriptiuon till I lose power.
Gazoo, if you're gonna zap her, do it now.
Part of the difference is rounding on the NHC's part, part of it is I'm using the far-southwest point of land. In any event, she's speeding up right on schedule.
Tornado spotted in Brevard south of Titusville.
And I suggest dry ice.
Why did Dr. Steve Lyons on TWC say that Cat 3 starts at 115 mph? The threshold is 111. And Wilma's there now.
Stop calling Wilma a witch. Don't you know it's very foolish to insult Mother Nature? Retribution can be a bitch!
Looking at the short-range Key West radar loop (I can now see half the eye on that), looks like you're going to get the right-side eyewall. Good luck, and may your feet stay on dry ground.
The NHC rounds to the nearest 5 mph, and since Cat 3 starts at 111, they'll say 115 if they're going with Cat 3.
Because forecast windspeeds go in 5mph increments. Wilma is at 110 mph now. If she is bumped up, it will be to 115 mph, not 111 mph.
So Lyons is correct within the forecasting framework.
on previous threads it has been helpful for those in the path to post locations in the tagline
Got a roof off in Coco- quite a bit of damage in the area of Titusville, Rockledge area.
My thoughts and prayers are with all my FRiends in Florida... May Wilma pass you by! :o)
unconfirmed report of a tornado 528 & 95 Cocoa moving north toward Titusville 9:45 PM
