The state prosecutor is investigating how Gilbert Sapperstein, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for his role in a scheme to steal $3.3 million from the city schools, managed to have nine months shaved off his sentence while serving the remainder on home detention in the suburban comforts of his Green Spring Valley home.

Sapperstein, who owns All-State Boiler Service Inc., pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy, bribery and theft in connection with a scheme to defraud the city school system. He admitted to paying bribes to a city schools employee in exchange for fraudulent work orders that netted his boiler business millions of dollars in extra revenue.
At his sentencing in city circuit court in August, he repaid the $3.3 million he stole from the school system plus $200,000 in interest, and paid $508,084 in other fees and fines, including $138,084 he stole from the city Department of Public Works under a similar scheme.

In addition to his boiler business, Sapperstein is also entrenched in the city bar scene as the owner of Star Coin Machine Co. He leases video poker games to dozens of bars and is a well-known liquor license broker. When people buy liquor licenses from him, he often requires that they also lease his video poker games. Bar owners sometimes use money they earn from the poker games to help cover expenses, including money owed to brokers.

Why would any entity allow liquor license brokers? That kind of setup is an invitation to corruption.
Another example of the two justice systems in America....one for the rich and the other one for the rest of us.
"Gilbert Sapperstein and his son, Mark sapperstein are alleged to be the close personal friend of Joseph Curran Jr. (Maryland Attorney General)Maryland's top state cop and Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley (Curran's son-in-law)"
O'Malley you'll remember, on national tv,called our Commander in Chief a terrorist because Baltimore's share of Homeland Security funds, after pouring in by the zillions, were being reduced.
while serving the remainder on home detention in the suburban comforts
Martha Stewart just got out--duh:)
Why would any entity allow liquor license brokers? That kind of setup is an invitation to corruption.
And even if you allowed such a noxious policy, why would a convicted felon be permitted to hold such a position?
Just one word Clinton.
Friends of top politicians, huh? Would these politicians be of the Democratic persuasion?
I can't figure out how that could happen either. I'm sure there wouldn't be any kind of payoffs involved.
Sapperstein pleaded guilty in May to ... bribery
Why? Gotta make room for the pot smokers!
I used to think the smell of corruption in Washington, D.C. came from within the city's borders, now I'm finding out that a lot of that is coming from Baltimore. Dude steals 3.3 million dollars and gets jail time at home? GIVE ME A BREAK....there has to be a joke here somewhere!! Un-freakin'-believable!!!!
9 months in jail for stealing $3.3 million dollars? Pathetic. Someone could rip off a few stereos and get more time. That isn't justice.
That is a safe assumption whenever a crooked politician's political party is not mentioned.
If the politician is a Republican, you can count on it being mentioned in the first paragraph, and maybe even in the headline.

More than that. The City school system got bail-out money from tne State, and they are being sued for an inadequate special-ed program.
bump
The Sappersteins are now in the process of building a new Hyatt at the Baltimore Inner Harbor. All of the major players in the deal are tied to the O’Malley/Curren family through donations and previous projects.
