The Miers nomination might be the most catastrophic political miscalculation of the Bush presidency.
Republican presidents have long been drawn to the stealth strategy on judicial nominations, picking conservatives, or supposed conservatives, without a public record so it will be harder for Democrats to oppose them. In the John Roberts nomination, a modified stealth strategy reached its height, giving the Court what is likely to be a conservative chief justice for the next 30 years. In the Harriet Miers nomination, the stealth strategy has all but collapsed, producing what might be the most catastrophic political miscalculation of the Bush presidency.

even a little devlish!
It was a miscalculation all right. President Bush was caught completely by surprise when a small group of Republican pundits decided to Bork Harriet Miers.
Real hatred has been on display, aimed at President Bush. It hit its target. The President has been weakened substantially.
The Republican party has been weakened too. A house divided against itself cannot stand. There is a good chance this will lead to liberal victories in 2006, and a Hillary Presidency in 2008.
Many evangelical Christian conservatives, like me, are totally disgusted by the way this was done. To me, lies and character assassination are still lies and slime when used by Republicans, not just when used by Democrats.
But still, I suppose congratulations are in order. They/you have won a great "victory". I'm sure you will enjoy your triumph.
"But still, I suppose congratulations are in order. They/you have won a great "victory". I'm sure you will enjoy your triumph."
Another Evangelical here. You are incorrect in your assumption that the newest solicitors of trash punditry have won anything. They will reap their just rewards.
Feisty little 'church ladies' ~ Bump!
You seem to have a problem with tough little Texan's with a vagina ~ maybe you should look at that. ;)
Life Is Good!
What vetting? She's Dubya's personal buddy. Vetting concluded, time to get on with the nomination.
I doubt this will stand. Especially now that some of the "dirt" is being exposed.
If she was a long time judge with a sterling reputation as a staunch conservative, she might survive. But with her actual creds, I doubt it.
Dude! You are talking nonsense. John Roberts appears more intelligent, he is better educated, and has far more relevant experience. He has a record of decisions on the Federal bench. He was profoundly articulate and erudite in his responses at his confirmation hearings. He is ten years younger. Harriet Miers is no John Roberts.
Been here all this time and you still don't know the difference between making an intelligent point and acting like a pompous jerk? That's lame, dude.
In other news... pundits are knocking themselves out trying to OUT SHRILL and OUT HYPERVENITLATE the last guy ("Hey look at me").
What with all of those CAPITAL LETTERS, I bet it would be real easy for you to name a greater political miscalculation of the Bush presidency. Well?
Alberto Gonzalez, Phew! The only positive thing I can think of to say about Ms. Miers is that she is not Alberto Gonzalez. It was this stalwart defender of our borders who said, "We have a responsibility as the U. S. Government to police our borders and we are doing the best we can."
Well, the best he can do is not nearly good enough. We certainly don't need an inept clown like this on our Nation's highest Court!
Can we forgive him, if we can forgive Tom DeLay for saying that we had pretty much gotten all the fat out of the budget?
Otherwise known as the pathetic cowardly spineless approach. Funny how Democrats don't use that strategy.
Now, with a Senate majority, it's time for GWB to appoint a solid originalist, like Janice Rodgers Brown. It would really be neat to seek creeps like Kennedy, Biden, and Schumer tryin to beat up on that black woman and being ahmmered by her. After they presented such a squalid spectacle of themselves on national TV, it's hard to believe the DemokRats could scrape together enough votes to sustain their fillibuster.
That makes a lot of sense.
Quite a disturbing thought, btw.
"She appears to have common sense and is grounded. "
She supports affirmative action, fought against budget cuts on Dallas city council and set up a very PC women's
seminar thingee at a college, that radical feminists got invited to.
how is that 'common sense' and 'grounded'?
"I do not want 9 Scalias on the court. One or two, yes. Not nine."
Nine would suit me just fine, although 5 would suffice.
You want a university, not a court. And check out their success at frontpagemagazine.com.
