Too Stealth
National Review On Cline ^ | Oct 21, 2005 | Rich Lowry

The Miers nomination might be the most catastrophic political miscalculation of the Bush presidency.

Republican presidents have long been drawn to the “stealth strategy” on judicial nominations, picking conservatives, or supposed conservatives, without a public record so it will be harder for Democrats to oppose them. In the John Roberts nomination, a modified stealth strategy reached its height, giving the Court what is likely to be a conservative chief justice for the next 30 years. In the Harriet Miers nomination, the stealth strategy has all but collapsed, producing what might be the most catastrophic political miscalculation of the Bush presidency.

Time for Harriet to withdraw her nomination. By not doing the right thing for President Bush she comes to look more and more like a shameless brown noser who gained his confidence simply to obtain power for herself.

That's some diabolic diabolicism.

I wish NRO would stop acting like democrats - and sounding like them too.

GWB's personal agenda is more important than the country itself..witnessed by his multiple failures to support his campaign promises, this choice, and the illegal Mexican situation. Elitism is as bad as liberalism, and his having similar consequences for this country.

I don't see why it's "acting like democrats" to finally give up on any pretense that Bush is a conservative.

"The Miers nomination IS the most catastrophic political miscalculation of the Bush presidency."

Fixed.

What were the President, Mr. Card, Mr. Rove and Ms. Miers thinking?

I do hope that Ms. Miers is renominated for a CoA post.

The Tradesports book on Miers being confirmed is down 32% from yesterday - from 65% to 30%.

To Lowery, Frum, Fund, NRO, and all the whiners, please get this straight: Miers' nomination will NOT be withdrawn, and she WILL be approved. Now chew on that.

Now that's a good column. It's way better than Krauthammer's column.

WOW!! a drop of more than fifty percent (32 out of 60 percentage points) in only a day. This just can't be sustained. It's just like a general staying in an exposed position where his army will be butchered instead of doing the hard thing and retreating while he has the chance.

What is interesting about the difference between Miers and Roberts is that Roberts is percieved to be an intellectual and Miers is not. Otherwise, we know as little about eithers judicial philosophy as the other.

"The Miers nomination IS the most catastrophic political miscalculation of the Bush presidency."

Let's hope it stays the worst. With all the resources available to the Oval Office, it's disconcerting that the vetting was so poorly done.

I sincerely hope that the message "the President knows Harriett Miers, so there's no need to completely vet her" was not conveyed. Somehow, I think it was.

I've been saying the same thing about the Bush Administration for years...you know...the current incarnation of NRO itself is full of former socialists and Democrats.

Exactly right...although very few people mention this...we have no idea how John Roberts will come out on the big constititional issues of the scope of the Commerce Clause...federalism and the 10th Amendment...the existence or extent of the "privacy right"...the delegation doctrine, etc., etc.

If he turns out to be a Justice who ignores the 10th Amendment and favors an expansive reading of the Commerce Clause and an ambiguous, undefined privacy right...will conservatives still be talking about how brilliant he is?

I find it hard to disagree on your first prediction.

As for the second - time will tell.

Miers is just another hangerson toady that attached herself to someone in a position of power. Toadies are dime a dozen.
