Misdemeanor charges are frequently offered in felony plea bargainings. That's the essence of "pleading to a lesser charge."
I too think this case is politically motivated, but it should play out. Delay should be exonerated in a court of law, not because he's got a Congressional "Get Out of Jail Free" card (unless you're willing to give Dims the same pass).
