I've wondered about that. Fifty matches is kinda weird. However, it was nighttime, and I wonder if the "matches" were misidentified nails? About the same size and shape, in the dark the heads of the nails could look like match heads. Presumably nails would be coated with explosion by products, and possibly blood.

The matches were found the next day after the crime scene tape had been removed. No way the FBI would've left matches lying in such close proximity to the bench, IMHO.
