NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier opened fire on a group of fellow soldiers during a morning exercise session at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on Thursday but no one was injured at the Army base.
The soldier, whose name was not released, "is in custody after firing shots at a physical training formation" but no one was wounded, Fort Campbell said in a statement.
It provided no other details but said the matter was under investigation.
The facility, on the Kentucky-Tennessee border about 60 miles northwest of Nashville, is home to the 101st Airborne Division that has served in Iraq.

""Obviously, this man is both nuts and an extremely poor shot."
....And was very "impressed" by his fellow soldiers when he was removed I'm sure.

They ARE amazing. My son had the privilege of being in support of the 101st when they 'got' Saddam's sons, and felt like he was a small part of it.
He was deployed from Ft. Campbell very early in the war (actually got there 3 days after it started), and spent 15 months there.
Never been prouder of anyone of anything in my entire life.

God love him..you tell him THANKS from me..my son is 11B so I am profoundly grateful for every soldier in support:)
As to the rest of this story- I'm hesitant to say much- Ft. Campbell was on lockdown most of the day and they're being tight-lipped.
But let me emphasize again- as the news has said- this was a NON military gun that was used, and the soldiers were in morning formation- so it wasn't an accident on a firing range or anything remotely like that.

Might be a mental issue and thought that this would get him out of the service Actually would be kept in the service and sent to Ft. Levenworth KS. Even if he was a Section 8.

Well, there are two good things in it:
First of all, that the perpetrator is a blissfully poor shot [unless - which is unlikely - it was an accidental discharge and/or a weapon malfunction];
The second is that the perp has been self-identified and will now be removed from circulation before greater harm would have befallen.

Thank you to you and all the other family members out here that have loved ones currently serving. I appreciate the sacrifice that both the families make and the soldiers themselves...
You all have every right to be proud.

Actually would be kept in the service and sent to Ft. Levenworth KS. Even if he was a Section 8. Correct, but he would not be sent to Iraq etc., might have been in a state of panic.

I'm still trying to figure out who the wusses were.....Someone shoots at me, I'm shooting back...and I don't miss. I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6. The kid is lucky he's not dead. He was firing on troops doing PT. They probably weren't carrying weapons.

True...I would not want any command to take chances with someone like this in a combat zone.

Thank you:)
My grandmother was a nurse. She went overseas to France in World War One and cared for countless wounded soldiers. She explained to me when I was a young woman during Viet Nam that I could be a "better citizen" by being a friend to a soldier. She encouraged me to write letters to the guys I knew who were in Nam...said it didn't matter what I wrote about- baseball, movies..anything. By following her direction I made friends for life..
I wonder if there are grandmothers like that now? Imagine trying to teach your grandchild about a quaint notion..."citizenship". Our soldiers don't need the lessons- but we have much to learn from them.

I am proud to say that my mother....(Grandmother to my niece and nephews.)
She is that kind of person... She is a first generation American from Irish parents, but she made sure that all her children realized that we were American first and proud of it... she was part of the reason I decided to serve..she instilled such a sense of civic pride in me that i felt that I owed my country at least 4 years of service, and I did proudly.
She has instilled that civic pride in her grandchildren too... (much to my liberal sister-in-laws dismay)
So there are still some of those Grandmothers out there for sure....
So glad I am related to one! :)
God Bless you and you family will continue to pray for their continued safety.

which reminds me...did you see the news report about the people from the 9th ward and the levee thing.
The reporter asked if the woman thought al qaida did the explosions in the levee.
The woman replied that she wasn't sure that this guy Al did it or not.

I don't even know if SSGT Hicks was decorated for what he did....I suspect not...but Hicks could've cared less for that kind of attention.. He already had more combat medals than any other of our DI's

Good thing it was not a Marine doing the shooting, or someone would have been hit.
