"Ben Barnes was Lt. Governor from 1969 to 1973.

His story was that he helped Bush get into the TANG as Lt. Governor, but Bush enlisted on May 27, 1968."

As former LAPD detective Mark Fuhrman likes to say, "the timeline will get you every time."

A person riding as high as Barnes and the Democrats were in 1968 (remember HHH carried Texas too) cannot be expected to remember if he was house speaker or lt. governor in May 1968. I have often seen people who are considered "experts" who just come to pieces trying to recall specific months and days from some 37 years ago. But it may be that Barnes fabricated his role in the Bush National Guard appointment. His daughter seemed to think so in 2004.
