I have changed my mind about Harriet Miers. Last Thursday, I wrote in OpinionJournal's Political Diary that "while skepticism of Ms. Miers is justified, the time is fast approaching when such expressions should be muted until the Senate hearings begin. At that point, Ms. Miers will finally be able to speak for herself."
But that was before I interviewed more than a dozen of her friends and colleagues along with political players in Texas. I came away convinced that questions about Ms. Miers should be raised now--and loudly--because she has spent her entire life avoiding giving a clear picture of herself. "She is unrevealing to the point that it's an obsession," says one of her close colleagues at her law firm.

It is fair. What guarantees come with a "solid" nominee?
NONE.
What price loyalty. I;ll take loyalty over a paper trail that would not pass the cabal's scrutiny.
OK, I'm going to tone down the mockery, which I don't think is appropriate. But if this kind of regional passion is best that Miers supporters can come up with, then her nomination is going down, as it should.
And if being a from the South is still important to you, then I'll name you 10 southerners who are actually, you know, qualified to be an associate justice of the Supreme Court.
Signed,
Another Damned Yankee
Oh FGS, don;t try to shove that crap at me. Her name is crossed off for her lapdog appearance on whathisname's show... Bill Maher? How utterly disgusting.
Ann has lost it. She's a Patrick J now without the nerve to run for elected office.
She's his close associate -- his WH counsel. She helped vet the other nominees.
He's selected her, much like he selected Cheney and we're seeing the same reaction here and in the press.
You don't like the pundits message, but their message on this nomination is the truth, based on who I trust.
Talk about unscientific.... ! Sheesh.
Only those who choose to post, and get embroialed in a huge thread appear on these threads.
I would suggest the poll is way more likely to be representative than the flame wars that develop on the threads.
Can someone give me a single word that sums up this sentence?
?
Yes, President Bush is the Red State Sun in our hearts! If any elitist tries to counter President Bush's line, we will smash her dog head!
Ann Coulter is wrong in her character assessment of the President.
Far from it, I'm of the opinion Souter weighed so heavily on him that he wanted someone as close to him as possible in an attempt to prevent another such occurence.
I do not like this nomination.
But Coulter has been over the line for quite some time in regards to this President and this administration.
I got it right off the Latest Post page; only 27 percent are FIRMLY against her; read it and weep.
Too bad for you -- POTUS nominates -- the senate either confirms or denies and POTUS has said repeatedly that he will nominate only those who are loyal to the Constitution and that's what he's done on the lower courts and with Roberts.
I trust POTUS much more than I trust pundits and folks here.
POTUS has his legacy to care about and he of all people will not make the same mistake as his father with Souter.
Well, you have to admit, even though they are only 27%, they do make 99% of the posts here lately. That same 27% translates into about 5% of the votes. You remember, 1% per weirdo party.
Do you have any clue at how MANY Freepers aren't posting on these threads because of the vitrol being expounded here?
We support President Bush because he (usually) agrees with and acts in accordence with certain principles. But he didn't this time.
You supported him because he was going to win the presidency. And now he's not towing your line so you're going to turn on him.
At least be honest about it.
I base all my decisions on Internet polls. If it's on the internet ... it must be true!
Point well taken. Both posts and online polls are unscientific for measuring general support.
I still argue that posts are a better neasure for those who are passionate on a given topic. Among Freepers passionately engaged on this issue, i.e., those who took the time to compose posts and engage in argument, the anti-Miers side dominates. That should count for something, as it takes a lot longer to post than to click an online poll.
They make up for their small numbers in quantity of posts.........LOL.
I guess it's too much to ask he care about America.
Do you approve of Harriet Miers for Supreme Court?
Yes

Need more info
33.4%

I hope those 2.9% are being sarcastic...
Why are you whining?
What has he done to show you he doesn;t care about America?
