Rove Said to Testify in CIA Leak Case
AP ^ | October 6, 2005 | JOHN SOLOMON

Posted on 10/06/2005 12:19:41 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Federal prosecutors have accepted an offer from presidential adviser Karl Rove to give 11th-hour testimony in the case of a CIA officer's leaked identity but have warned they cannot guarantee he won't be indicted, according to people directly familiar with the investigation.

The persons, who spoke only on condition of anonymity because of grand jury secrecy, said Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald has not made any decision yet on whether to file criminal charges against the longtime confidant of President Bush or others.

The U.S. attorney's manual requires prosecutors not to bring witnesses before a grand jury if there is a possibility of future criminal charges unless they are notified in advance that their grand jury testimony can be used against them in a later indictment.

Rove has already made at least three grand jury appearances and his return at this late stage in the investigation is unusual.

The prosecutor did not give Rove similar warnings before his earlier grand jury appearances.

I never trusted Fitzgerald. He's no better than Ronnie Earle.

Then you clearly don't know what you are talking about. They are in completely different leagues when it comes to competency, politics, and integrity.

Given the politics involved, I'm not so sure Rove would even follow his lawyers' advice on that.

So you're saying Rove deserves to be indicted? Are you sure you didn't wander in from DU?

Same old same old. Have a Grand Jury investigation, nail somebody for lying to the Grand Jury.

You ask: "Could someone please how anyone could be indicted for 'outing' Plame when her husband (Wilson) bragged about his 'secret agent' wife on his web page some years ago?"

I don't believe that it was claimed that Wilson stated on his web page that she worked for the CIA or as a secret agent there -- only that he listed her maiden name. (See http://www.opinionjournal.com/forms/printThis.html?id=110004094)

I honestly don't think that is what protecting covert status is about. Assuming she was covert, it wasn't her maiden name that was secret. (Someone could get that by doing various sorts of background checking, I think.)

The bigger question, it seems to me, is who first publicly stated that she worked for the CIA (as a secret agent)? If she wasn't really covert, maybe none of this matters. But if she was, then the question is who blew her covert status -- not who blabbed about her maiden name (which would be known to a lot of people, and pretty easily found out).

CNN says that Rove's lawyer said he did NOT get a target letter.

I think the President has made it clear that you either cooperate with the investigation, or you are fired (quite a contrast from Clinton).

It was a typo meant to say NOT.

I have no idea what will happen, but everything I've read suggests that Fitzgerald is an honest but hard-nose prosecutor that has been successful going after some slippery targets in IL, both Dem and GOP.

As has been said a million times, a prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich. The question is can Rove be convicted, or will he have to plead out just to get this off the President's head, or will Bush pull an Ernie Fletcher and just pardon everyone?

From the article: but have warned they cannot guarantee he won't be indicted, according to people directly familiar with the investigation.

This means he's a target.

I hate screaming mental midgets who wander from one partisan attack sounbite to another. I have no idea if Rove did anything wrong, and certainly am not going to assume guilt. But I'm also not going to slander the prosecutor just because there is a rumor that something I don't want to see happen might come to pass.

Grow up.
