Years from now we will look back and we will know which commentators were right on Miers. Right now, everyone is just taking their best guess.
The Bush presidency is indeed marked by a courageous willingness to think and do big things. And he has consistently out-smarted the Democrats. Right now, Bush has Senator Reid basically endorsing his Supreme Court nominee.
I think Bush knows what he's doing.
Well,,we have two choices - either we trust the president's judgment or we don't. Like it's been said on other threads, and it made it clear for me after my initial doubt... I voted last November. And if Bush picks Miers, then it's Miers.
Bush isn't guessing. He knows exactly what he's got in his hand. He's either knowingly betraying us or he's making a stunningly brilliant call. We'll know soon enough.
What about Krauthammer's excellent point on how Miers will have to recuse herself on so many issues that she was immersed in while White House counsel? Bush blew it. I don't care what his strategy is - it all stinks to high heaven. It's like his dad saying, Watch who I pick for VP - this decision is all mine - and he picks Dan Quayle. A nice guy, yes, but a total lightweight for being #2 in line for the Presidency. Now W picks a woman who has worked very hard to put women on the frontlines of combat, illegally. If she can circumvent the law as an adviser, I am very worried with she would do on the SCOTUS.
I think Bush knows what he's doing.
I think so too. Besides promising us time and time again that he will fill courts will conservative judges that will NOT make law, many forget that Bush was himself a victim of a SC justice who is a traitor.
I think Bush has learned well from the sins of his father (Souter) and has chosen someone he trusts to stay true to conservatism, the rule of law and the Constitution.
We'll know soon enough because unless Miers commits a real boner during the hearings, she'll be the next justice.
I respect the President and although I don't agree with everything he's done or not doing (ala illegal immigration), I'm going rely on my gut instinct and trust him.
He's never hidden his intentions... he plans on promoting a conservative agenda.
I sure hope you're right. If you're wrong, we're looking at 30 years of another Souter in drag.
That's the problem, isn't it? - - "years from now".... It didn't have to be that way, and I am sick of having to keep my fingers crossed for years.
With so many good judges out there who are certifiable warriors of the right, who are fighting the good fight every day on the front lines, paying their dues and then some, and leaving a "paper trail" a mile long, why did Bush have to come up with two stealths in a row??
Now we can only keep our fingers crossed and hope that Miers isn't another Souter.
"I think Bush knows what he's doing."
Isn't that just dandy. You're in the trenches, ready to storm a pillbox, your life is on the line. Your sargeant gets the order from the commander in chief to go.
"Over the top boys, into the jaws of death, I THINK OUR LEADER KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING!"
Oh yeah, those are inspiring words if I ever heard them.
"You've been fighting for judicial restraint all your life, now it's time to give your life for Harriet Miers, the best candidate!"
Oh yeah, I'm a happy camper now.

Now I feel better.
I don't....
The White House is stunned at the reaction...he picked the fight with the wrong party. Open warfare has broken out alright....but it ain't the warfare we all wanted.
Right now, Bush has Senator Reid basically endorsing his Supreme Court nominee.Ummm....Reid has been pushing her all along. He thinks she's a Souter in disguise. I'm afraid he's right. And regardless, she's spectacularly unqualified for the job. Bush will never regret Iraq, but he'll rue the day he nominated Miers.
