Bubba: Iraq war's 'a quagmire'
BY KENNETH R. BAZINET DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU
Former President Clinton worries for the mission in Iraq. WASHINGTON - Former President Bill Clinton says Iraq "looks like a quagmire," and estimates "the odds are not great of our prevailing there."
But, speaking for an interview that appears in the November issue of Ladies Home Journal, Clinton qualified his quagmire remark by saying, "It's not Vietnam."
"The reason this is not Vietnam is that 58% of the eligible voters showed up and voted in Iraq," Clinton told the magazine. The South Vietnamese government was "never legitimate" in the eyes of the Vietnamese, he said.
The former President, who has teamed up with President Bush's father to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina and last December's Indian Ocean tsunami, said the key to success is getting the Iraqis to defend themselves against the insurgents.
"Having said that, it could go wrong," Clinton admitted. "Since the end of World War II, the only major foreign power that succeeded in putting down an insurgency was the British putting down the Malay insurgency, but the British stayed 15 years.
"So you can say for historical reasons, the odds are not great of our prevailing there," Clinton pointed out.
Clinton's spokesman told the Daily News yesterday his boss remains staunchly committed to a U.S. victory in Iraq.

Still rationalizing his Draft Dodging status, I see.
The idea is to get Iraq to the point where they can and will clean their own toilet, not for us to clean it for them once and for all.
US troops remain in Bosnia ... and that is NOT a quagmire?
Snort. So what exactly is his position? No wonder he gave the interview to LHJ.
And how about the fact that so many of the so-called insurgents are really foreign imports, Bubba? That kinda croaks the comparison, too, don' it?
Clinton should start following what is going on there beyond the frontpage of the NY Times.
The blogs are leading the charge on this (again). The fighting that recently ended in the north and is now going on in the west is the beginning of the end for the terrorists.
Zarqawi has gone so far as to start sending guys home from Iraq. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1495221/posts

Elder Bushes need to smarm a little more with Clinton. Not a word of dissent from them. Really plays well with the masses.
That bastion of hard hitting international news and commentary.
What... was Katie Couric too busy?
Bill Clinton is a Quagmire.
STFU!!!
and just go away.
Maybe we should spend more time calling attention to Bosnia. And just maybe we should get used to the fact that fighting terror is a world wide war and it won't be over in a week.
Iraquisation similar to the old vietnamisation policy.
The Vietnamese are sure enjoying their free elections under the communists (sarcasm off) thanks to Clinton and his ilk. Liberals are despicable people. Millions killed, concentration camps, boat people, despotism, poverty - and to the liberals the Southeast Asians are just happy as pie and will be so long as they have communist masters.
The exit strategy today is different to what it was last year and can change again.
It was originally to not leave until we had a viable working Iraq democracy. Now its to leave when the Iraqis can maintain order.
Whose to say it wont change again.
According to the Pentagon latest the Iraq military have only one battalion capable of operating without US support.
My thoughts exactly. Whenever you have a situation with hundreds (or thousands) of years of animosity, coupled with the corrosive influence of Islam, 'our odds of prevailing there are not that great'. It's not a failure of Bush or even of Bubba;, it's just a fact. They're gonna kill one another and put burkas on the women, with us or without us. It's really a shame. But I'm still proud that we're making things better for them, for as long as we can stay the course.
I saw Bill on TV yesterday...he looked skinny, haggard, and just terrible! I thought, Bill can't escape justice from above...
Bill's a talking head for his wife, saying the things she can't or won't. Cleaver
Can't the nation get a restraining order against this idiot?
