SUKHUMI, September 30 (RIA Novosti) - The president of Abkhazia, a self-proclaimed independent republic on Georgian territory, said he would not agree to the deployment of U.S. and EU peacekeeping forces in the region.
"The CIS peacekeeping troops were sent to the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone in line with the May 14, 1994 agreement on a ceasefire and the disengagement of forces," Sergei Bagapsh said, responding to a proposal by Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to involve the United States and the European Union in the peacemaking process. "Abkhazia does not plan on making any amendments to the document."
"No other countries can be engaged in the peacekeeping process without our consent," Bagapsh said.
Saakashvili said Wednesday that the U.S. and EU should be part of the settlement efforts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the other self-proclaimed republic in Georgia. "Russia has played a crucial role in the process, but the U.S., which has expressed willingness, must also get involved," the Georgian president said.
Saakashvili said the EU could also play a central role in resolving the conflicts. "Russia is a major player, but Europe must also become more actively involved."
Moldova's Transdnestr region, another self-proclaimed post-Soviet republic, recently agreed to U.S. and EU mediation but only as observers, the republic's foreign ministry said Friday.
The decision regarding Transdnestr was reached during recent talks between the two conflicting sides and mediators (Russia, Ukraine, and the OSCE) held in Odessa, a Ukrainian Black Sea city. The OSCE adopted a document that said observers had no right to participate in decision-making, to sign protocols, to preside over meetings, or to call for meetings.
"We have long been opposed to U.S. involvement, as its role in the Balkans, for example, did not improve, but rather deteriorated, things," Valery Litskai, the foreign minister of Transdnestr, said.
As opposed to Polands push in Moldova, Ukraine, Belaruss? Oh please, the angels have arrived, you only constantly preach about over throwing Luko or Yanukovich, etc, talk about the kettle and the pot. Looks like the pro-EU color/flower/etc revolutions are falling apart, since those who build their houses on socialism, like the EU and its member states, will sooner or later come tumbling down into the dust heap of history.
That's mighty white of you. Have you ever been to Abkhazia? I have, granted it was only for 3 days. The people overwhelming (read this carefully) DO NOT WANT TO BE PART OF GEORGIA, but you can then just drop the mask of democracy and be a nice, PC autocrat by forcing them to live under the rule of those who 12 years ago tried to exterminate them. Gee, makes about as much sense as giving Israel (without bothering to care what the Israelis think) back to the Arabs or Bangladesh to Pakistan or East Timor to Indonesia or Taiwan to China....so of course you must support the return of Taiwan to China right? Never mind, also, that voluntarily, 90%+ of the population took up Russian citizenship in 2002, giving up on the dream of independence because they knew they'd never have peace with Georgia. But hay, why bother with the details if surrendering these people will make the anti-Russians or the EU crowd happy, right? Makes one look like a "moderate" or "liberal", kinda like a Yablaka member, you know one of the parties that ruled Russia for 8 years and profited from the biggest rape of resources in known history.
Actually, Abhazia was an independent Soviet Republic and was then incorporated into the Georgian Soviet Republic.
Lets ask an Ukrainian. Mazepa do you noticed any Polish territorial push in Ukraine, Belarus or Moldova? Similar to Russian moves in Transnistria, South Ossetia or Abkhazia.
Right, now that they've ethnically cleansed the Georgian majority from Abkhazia with Basayev's help, and the help of his Russian dhimmis.
Oh goody, because history began in 1993...hay better idea, lets say history began in 1893 and Poland was part of Russia, Austria-Hungary and Germany....welp, time to return it to what it was.
Wow, you mean the same way that the Israelies removed a good chunk of the arabs to become the majority in Israel during the war and through mass migration? I guess you'd have no problems giving up Israel to the Arabs. Of course the Georgians only became the majority there after your hero Stalin annexed Abhazia to Georgia and made a forced migration of Georgians into Abhazia in the 1930s. Kinda like the Chechens became the majority in Grozny and the Tarek River Valley after they and Stalin exterminated the Orthodox Christian (oh but you don't consider them Christian, if I recall) Russian Tarek Cossaks from the area.
As if a territorial push is the only way to be a neoimperialist....forcing your will is neoimperialist, taking territory is imperialist. And actually you do push for EU expension (nothing like those nice socialists gobbling up more human souls) by pushing pro-EU candidates. Must sadden your heart that such a fine socialist whore as Tymoshenko was finally shown the door.
It seems you are the one who does not consider the Georgians to be Christian enough, dhimmi.
Again, how nice that you start history in 1993, but lets not ask how it got that way, after all, another fellow traveller of yours, Stalin, made it so or that there was no ethnic cleansing in Kosovo and once again you side with the Islamics on that issue...how typical.
How about the Orthodox Armenians who were forced (the majority of the capital Tbilisi at that) into a second class citizenry and "encouraged" to immigrate, while Georgia took the Azerbajani Muslim side and blockaded Christian Armenia and still does? Oh those little details.
I guess you just support Stalin's resettlement of the Russian ubermensch, but not the "sub-human" Georgians.
Oh yes I see. The Chechen "freedom fighters" were purely nationalist and had nothing to do with creating an Islamic Caucasian caliphate until they were driven to Wahhabism by desperation. Did you learn that from the New York Times?
These poor Russians found themselves no longer conquerers, but unwelcome illegal immigrants when the Soviet Union fell (the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the twentieth century
Conquerers? I hardly find people forced out of their cities and villages by an paranoid dictator and pushed into other areas as conquerers. At the same time, especially in Estonia, there were Russians living there for 400+ years and in some areas as far back as Ruric's time, 1200 years ago.
If you are going to try and be sarcastic, then at least try and be historical about it. At that point Abhazia was part of a quasi organization of the Caucus Union (now dead) which included not only the Islamic Chechens, Daghistanies and Ingushies but also the Orthodox Ossessians, Abhaz and Russian Cossaks from the area.
Except for Abkhazian Georgians.
On the same level as Israeli Arabs or Czech Germans or Africaner South Africans. As for the Abkhazian Georgians, they were very busy, just liek the Israeli Arabs towards Jews in subjugating and exterminating the Abhaz culture, just like those "lovely" muslims in Kosovo are doing to the Christian Serbian people and culture.
You won't convince me, but I'm sure your sermon on the inhumanity of the non-Christian Georgian criminals will convince some to join you in dhimmitude.
Or Baltic Russians?
I am glad to see that you also support expelling the evil white Africans from the land they "stole" from the blacks who are rightfully taking it back. This help clarify the different sides we are on.
