Oct. 3, 2005 — Harriet Ellan Miers is White House counsel and was formerly President Bush's personal lawyer in Texas. She first served in the White House as staff secretary and was deputy chief of staff before she was named counsel upon Alberto Gonzales' transition to attorney general.
When he was the governor of Texas, Bush once publicly introduced Miers as a "pit bull in size 6 shoes."
Born and raised in Dallas, Miers earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics and her law degree from Southern Methodist University. In addition to her legal career, she served one term on the Dallas City Council.
Miers, 60, broke barriers for women throughout her career. She reportedly was the first woman hired by the prestigious Dallas law firm Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely, where she became a successful commercial litigator. She also became the first female president of the Dallas Bar Association in 1985 and was the first woman elected president of the Texas Bar Association in 1992.
Miers met Bush in the 1980s, according to published reports, and she was counsel for his 1994 campaign for governor. He appointed her chair of the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.
Miers then was president of Locke, Purnell, Rain & Harrell and co-managing partner of Locke Liddell & Sapp before she joined the White House in 2001.
In addition, Miers was named one of the Top 50 Most Influential Lawyers by the National Law Journal in 1998, and she received numerous other awards from groups including the Dallas Women Lawyers Association, the Anti-Defamation League and the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers.

Unfortunately, many that are posting "fact" never heard of her prior to this AM and are using conjecture, half truths and rumors to paint her positions on a variety of issues.
The threads regarding her have been basically rumor mills and gossip columns....

We as in those who favor strict constructionists in the mold of Scalia and Thomas on the bench.
Lets hope I get proven wrong and can look back at some of these posts and laugh a few years down the road.
They way I look at things like this is that if your a pessimist you're either always right, or pleasantly surprised.

I might be a cannibal, but there are still certain things I won't eat. You, on the other hand, will apparently eat anything that the White House feeds you.
I am very dissapointed with this nominee. Bush should have picked a young person, and a conservative. It looks as though he did neither. Now we get to watch a big fight from the Dems, just to get a potential dud through.
Please notice I said "potential". Bush had a chance to profoundly influence the court. Maybe he did, I am not sure. Neither are you. We could have been a whole lot surer. Bush has failed utterly to capitalize on a Repulican majority and presidency.

I agree with you. I think Bush is a phoney. He just doomed the Republican party to minority status. He lied to millions of people. I voted for him twice, thinking he was sincere about the justice he would nominate. He fooled me and millions of others. I would love this nomination from a Republican President if I were a liberal democrat.
The math major is the first thing I've seen that gives me any hope.
We really shouldn't have to guess, but we do.
Anyone know if this woman is a strict constructionist? Does she believe in original intent? Does she believe in the 9th and 10th amendments, states rights, and the limited role of the central government in our federal system? Will she limit use of the commerce and general welfare clauses? Will she refrain from looking to foreign precedent?
If Republican senators do not get appropriate reassurances to these questions (and they should be voted out of office if they don't ask them), they should vote against Mrs. Miers.
I don't trust supreme court nominees just because they are nominated by a Republican.
