Amtrak representatives tell us that all passenger train service has been halted in both directions out of Syracuse due to a train derailment. The tracks will be closed until at least noon on Thursday.
Amtrak says it is bussing people between Syracuse and Albany. Passengers who dont want to take the bus can apply for a reimbursement, but Amtrak officials say it is unlikely they will get one because alternative travel arrangements are being provided.
The derailment happened in Amsterdam, NY, which is just west of Albany, around 8:30 Wednesday morning. There are reports that several cars have derailed on a CSX train, and one box car has even fallen into the Mohawk River. Amsterdam Police say two sets of tracks have been torn up because of the accident. In all, 18 cars left the tracks.
There are no reports of injuries.
