I find it highly suspicious that the article did not compare the transmitter to a brick of Velveeta.

That said, I found this to be one of those "I wonder if this is some sort of test run" kind of articles.

No Reports Of Missing, Overdue Aircraft


LARCH MOUNTAIN, Wash. -- Crews are flying over Southwest Washington in search of a possible downed plane.
An emergency locator beacon started sending a signal Monday night from the Larch Mountain area southeast of Battle Ground.

There are no reports of missing or overdue aircraft, but officials say an emergency aircraft beacon cannot be ignored.

Three aircraft, including an Oregon National Guard helicopter, are combing the area for the source of the signal.
