The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Most were never examined in a laboratory but rather simply segregated by threat credibility. Samples of what were considered highly credible may have been sent to a lab for analysis. ----------------------------------------------------------- What if hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of locations tested positive for _B. anthracis_? The number of reports of white powder almost brought response and lab personnel to the breaking point, even though only a small fraction of samples were ever fully examined and fewer still found to be positive. ------------------------------------------------------------ In these reports, we find some evidence of possible background levels of tularemia in various locations. Suppose there was a reported bioterrorism attack involving _F. tularensis_ or _B. anthracis_. Thousands of samples would be again taken by emergency services personnel. Many would also use bio-agent detector technologies to perform field tests. ----------------------------------------------------------- What should they expect to find? Are _B. anthracis_ or _F. tularensis_ present as background organisms? If so, are they background everywhere or only in certain environments? ------------------------------------------------------------- If this information is not available, what is considered "normal" or "safe"? What levels of organism require remediation? Without answers to these and multiple other thorny questions, the USA is at risk for a situation that terrorizes the public for no reason other than a lack of knowledge regarding natural background. ----------------------------------------------------------- Consider if the levels of background radiation were not identified. LARCH MOUNTAIN, Wash. -- Crews are flying over Southwest Washington in search of a possible downed plane.
An emergency locator beacon started sending a signal Monday night from the Larch Mountain area southeast of Battle Ground.

There are no reports of missing or overdue aircraft, but officials say an emergency aircraft beacon cannot be ignored.

I'm with you. I find the "accidental" engagement of a device like this to be as likely as finding an activated marine EPIRB in the middle of a desert.

It could be that the location given in the article is itself a key to someone's plan, and the media have unwittingly announced either a "go" signal or a step in a more complicated scenario.

Glitch forces fix to cockpit doors

For more than two years, U.S. airplane passengers have flown more
securely because high-tech cockpit doors created a barrier to prevent a
repeat of 9/11, when terrorists entered the cockpit and commandeered
four planes. But, the doors were not foolproof. In December 2003, a
Northwest Airlines maintenance mechanic inside an Airbus A330 jet on
the ground in Minneapolis pushed the microphone button to talk into his
handheld radio. Though he hadn't touched the cockpit door, he heard the
sound of its lock operating.

A suspect in a bombing plot against Israeli ships in Turkey earlier gave
$50,000 to people accused of carrying out a series of bombings in
Istanbul that killed 60 people in 2003, according to testimony from a
suspect submitted by prosecutors to a court, the Anatolia news agency
said. Prosecutors in the trial of some 70 suspects in the 2003 bombings
of two synagogues, the British Consulate and a London-based bank gave
testimony from Burhan Kus, who was captured by U.S.-led forces during
fighting in Iraq.
