The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Home grown Islamists may hit US: FBI chief
Full Story

WASHINGTON -- The United States could be attacked by "home grown" Islamist terror groups, the FBI's chief has warned.

FBI Director Robert Mueller told the London Financial Times newspaper in an interview published Thursday that the United States could face attacks from "home-grown terrorism" very similar to the July 7 bombings in London that killed 52 people and wounded another 700, Mueller said.

When asked if the United States could face such attacks from "home-grown groups", Mueller answered emphatically: "Absolutely, it could," the Financial Times said.

Arab press split on Iraq's future
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 6:28am
Iraq may be on the road to recovery after its landmark constitutional
referendum, some Arab newspapers predicted Sunday, while others
suggested bloodier days were still ahead regardless of the vote
outcome. Ahmed Al-Jarallah, editor-in-chief of Kuwait's
English-language Arab Times, wrote that Iraqis scored a victory by
voting on a new constitution despite three decades of Saddam Hussein's
oppression, two years of rampant insurgent-led violence and post-U.S.
invasion interference from Iran and Syria.

Defendant wasn't tortured to confess, FBI doctor says
Pittburgh Tribune Review ^ | Oct 18, 2005

Posted on 10/18/2005 12:47:31 AM PDT by Hadean

ALEXANDRIA -- An FBI doctor testified Monday that he found no significant scars on the back of a U.S. citizen who claims that Saudi police whipped and tortured him into falsely confessing he joined al-Qaida and plotted to assassinate President Bush.

Prosecutors allege Ahmed Omar Abu Ali joined al-Qaida in 2002 while enrolled in a college in Saudi Arabia. They say he confessed to plotting Bush's assassination along with other terrorist acts, including plans to establish an al-Qaida cell in the United States and to rescue of Muslim prisoners detained at Guantanamo Bay.

US to stay in Afghanistan as long as needed
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 6:47am
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Wednesday said US troops
would stay in Afghanistan as long as needed, as Washington tries to
bolster its influence in the region as an antidote to extremism. In a
meeting with President Hamid Karzai, whose government is fighting
insurgents loyal to the Taliban that were ousted from power here by a
US-led war four years ago, Rice said the US goal was peace.

Jordan, Kuwait allocate funds to combat bird flu
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 9:39am
Jordan and Kuwait have allocated millions of dollars to stockpile
medicine in case of a breakout of bird flu as part of preventive measures
to deal with the disease threat. In Turkey, authorities investigating
chicken deaths in eastern regions close to Iran and Syria said initial lab
tests showed no signs of bird flu. Turkish officials also played down the
possibility of bird flu spreading there after its discovery in the northwest.
Jordan's Health Minister Saeed Darwazeh and Agriculture Minister
Muzahem Muyahssen meanwhile told Ad-Dustour newspaper the
government allocated $12.2 million to stockpile medicine in case of a
breakout in the kingdom.

Rice accuses Syria of stirring up difficulties in Palestinian
camps in Lebanon
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 9:42am
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice accused Damascus on Sunday
of continuing to destabilize Lebanon. According to statements by Rice in
London, Syria is "stirring up difficulties in the Palestinian camps in
Lebanon." She added that Damascus also continues to disregard UN
Security Council Resolution 1559, issued September 2, 2004, which
called for a complete Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon and the end of all
Syrian interference in its eastern neighbor's affairs. It also calls for
disarming all militia in Lebanon, including those of the Palestinian camps
and Hizbullah's military wing.

FORMER NYPD UNDERCOVER OFFICER FIGHTS TO FREE SLAVES

By Mark Ellis
Senior Correspondent, ASSIST News Service

GARFIELD, NEW JERSEY (ANS) -- Her brother founded the Guardian Angels to fight crime in the subways of New York. After a brief career with the NYPD, she’s become a guardian angel of a different sort—one who battles the continuing existence of slavery in Sudan and other parts of the world.

“I not only speak about slavery in Sudan, I speak about 27 million modern-day slaves—including reports of slavery in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut,” says Maria Sliwa, a writer, speaker and founder of the human rights organization Freedom Now. While describing herself as an evangelical Christian, she is just as likely to address a synagogue or Unitarian gathering as she decries the evils of slavery.

In some respects, she’s found Jewish audiences to be more responsive toward persecution and enslavement issues than her evangelical audiences. “Among evangelicals, there has been almost a tendency to glorify martyrdom,” Sliwa observes. “The Jewish perspective is that if you know somebody suffering or in pain, it’s a sin to turn away,” she says. “That’s what the Jews believe and that’s why they’ve been proactive in helping people enslaved.”

Many of her listeners are stunned by the pervasive existence of the practice—officially abolished worldwide in 1927. “There is slavery in every state in the U.S. and on every continent except Antarctica,” Sliwa notes. She cites CIA estimates that 50,000 people in the U.S. are trafficked as domestics, garment, agricultural, or sex slaves.

On her trips to Uganda and Sudan she’s documented numerous examples of male and female slaves who suffered horrific mistreatment in the hands of their captors. “I found a number of boys who had been enslaved and freed that had also been raped,” Sliwa says. “This is a type of trauma that needs to be addressed and nobody is talking about it.”

Last year, she visited Pastor Sam Childers at the orphanage he runs on 42 acres in Nimule, South Sudan. His orphanage has become a refuge for children fortunate enough to escape from the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), which operates in the border areas between Uganda and Sudan. The LRA has kidnapped more than 20,000 children since 1988 and forced them to serve in the largest army of child soldiers in Africa.

One month before Sliwa’s arrival at the orphanage, Pastor Childers had undertaken a mission that freed 25 LRA child-soldiers aged 4 to 14. As Sliwa talked with these children, she discovered stories even more traumatizing than rape. Some had been forced to attack women collecting firewood in the vicinity of the orphanage. Several women were abducted, and several had lips, ears or breasts savaged by the attackers.

“They say they chop off the ears because people don’t hear the truth and they chop off the lips because people don’t speak the truth.”

In this army of child slaves, they are compelled to engage in such atrocities. “Some of the kids were forced to chop up their teachers and then cook and eat them,” Sliwa reports. “Some were so traumatized they couldn’t talk,” she says. Sliwa was grateful she spoke to a child psychologist before she went on the trip as she counseled her young victims.

When Sliwa returns to the U.S. she is dismayed by the lack of awareness in the church about these subjects. “Many churches are only praying once a year for the persecuted church,” she notes. “I know the church has been active opposing abortion and electing George Bush, but why is it so silent about persecution and slavery?”

“I don’t want to romanticize the suffering,” she adds. “My focus is trying to end it.”
Maria Sliwa often lectures on modern-day slavery, has published on boy slave rape in Sudan and is founder of Freedom Now News, (www.FreeWorldNow.com) an international human rights news service.

Annan Braces for Hariri Slaying Report
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 2:13pm
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday he is determined to
keep an upcoming report into the assassination of former Lebanese
Prime Minister Rafik Hariri from fanning tensions between Syria and
Lebanon. The Lebanese opposition has accused Syria of playing a role in
Hariri's Feb. 14 death in a car bombing, allegations Damascus
repeatedly has denied. Annan said he expected to receive a report on
the investigation into the slaying on Friday.

Venezuelan Troops Assert Claim in Dispute
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 2:17pm
Caribbean islands have long been a destination for newlyweds, but this
remote, treeless speck of land isn't on any travel agent's list. Seventeen
Venezuelan sailors now live at a newly established base here, and on
Saturday two couples were married — apparently the first such
ceremonies to be held on the island. Venezuela's mainland is 380 miles
away, but it's asserting a claim of ownership despite the fact Isla de
Aves — Bird Island — is much closer to Dominica, Antigua and Puerto
Rico.

Fake $100 bills circulating Baltimore area
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 2:31pm
The Baltimore area is being swamped with counterfeit $100 bills that are
cleverly crafted but relatively easy to detect once retailers know what to
look for, federal authorities say. The fakes have been turning up in
banks along the East Coast, but according to the Baltimore office of the
U.S. Secret Service, the number of bills seized in Maryland is greater
than in any other state from North Carolina to New York. Officials can't
say who is responsible or whether Baltimore is the counterfeiters' home.

Government corruption at new heights in Brazil
Posted on Monday, October 17, 2005 at 2:53pm
Amid the biggest government corruption scandal in the nation's history,
Brazilians sometimes don't know whether to laugh or cry. Consider: An
official from the ruling Workers Party was detained as he tried to board a
flight with $100,000 in cash stuffed down his pants. Then there was the
case of the "events planner" who, after being questioned by
congressional investigators for allegedly providing prostitutes to
politicians, speculated in public about running for office herself.
