When I was a kid you could still buy sticks of dynamite off the shelf in the hardware store. Ranchers used them mainly on tree stumps and rocks.

Things were different then. I wouldn't have dreamed of touching it.

The family farm (my grandmother's) always had a supply of dynamite and blasting caps on hand for removing stumps and loosening large rocks in the fields. I got to practice, sometimes by cutting sticks in quarters and in half, to see what it took for various things. I didn't get quite the thrill of firecrackers from using dynamite.
