My hope: Red Sox win 3 and the AL East, Indians win 3 and get the wild card and the Yankees get an early vacation.

The Moose vs. Schilling on Sunday.

You will be able to lay down in the middle of Fifth Avenue on Sunday afternoon, and take a nice long nap...

Unless'n, of course, the Yankees take the first two games...

The Skankees wouldn't be in this position if they didn't lose so many games to the HORRIBLE Devil Rays and Royals.

GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are a lot of interesting aspects to this weekend's series between Boston and New York. For one thing, the Yankee rotation has shaken out in such a way that their two best starting pitchers (Chacon and Small) won't be taking the mound. Actually, who would have ever thought that these two guys -- neither of whom was even on the team on July 1st -- would end up being their best starting pitchers?

If the Yankees win one of the first two games, then they are guaranteed a tie for the AL East title and will probably play the Sunday game without doing anything dramatic in terms of their pitching. If they go into the Sunday game needing a win to tie Boston for the AL East title (especially if Cleveland is ahead or tied for the wild card lead), then they'll pull out all the stops and use a dozen different pitchers on Sunday if necessary -- which means that they'd be very thin for a Monday game if they win on Sunday.

If that kind of scenario unfolds, then the Yankees could end up in a position kind of similar to what they faced in the playoffs last year, when they were up 3-0 against Boston but actually faced a daunting task for the remainder of the series -- because a rainout early in the series ensured that the Yankees' lack of depth in the starting rotation would become a real problem when they had to play something like five nights in a row.

Considering the Red Sox have come this far without their two best pitchers, Martinez and Schilling, it is amazing. - Tom

(Martinez was traded and never played a game. - Schilling was injured and only saw minimal action, starting only 10 games all year.)

Here are my comments on a thread entitled another September flop posted 9/23/05 they seem relevant here as well.

It ain't over yet. The Sox are not the team they were last year but the Yankees aren't all that impressive either.Let's face it, neither team's pitching is all that great. Oh you can make an argument the Yankee starers are better but look at their middle relief, it sucks! get to the bullpen aside from Rivera and maybe Gorden. Rivera isn't bullet proof like the old days and lets face it, who gives him more fits then Boston. The season will come down to the final 3 games against the evil empire. Will the Yanks fold like a deck of cards as they did in their final four games last year? Probably not. Will The Red Sox manager wait too long before pulling a struggling pitcher? Yup. Will he pull one too soon only to have us watch a meltdown and no one warming in the pen? you betcha! My point is it's a coin toss, I'll be watching, screaming and throwing things as Terry shows us time and time again why as a manager, he sucks. Yet despite all of this I still think we have a chance despite all of our short commings.

I will never forget the look on Mark Shields face last year when Jim Lerher on The Newshour asked him if he could either have a Red Sox championship or a Kerry President, which he would pick, did not want to answer the question.

That hit by Ortiz in the 9th last night was massive but not to be forgotten is Johnny Damon with a gutsy move to steal 2nd to put himself in scoring position (and he just barely squeezed in there under the tag). His steal was just as important as Ortiz's hit (it's not a given the next guy walks if he doesn't steal the base- maybe he hits into a DP instead).

Boston are playing like champions.

I have to say though, the Yankees are thundering down the straight under a full head of steam. They look pretty impressive.

It's going to be a great season ending series. You couldn't really script it any better than that.
