Many men have found peace at the Hub's veterans shelter – and one of them is living as a woman.
Jacquelyn Bissett, a former M16-toting Army private who kept his bisexuality secret for fear of retribution, is now accepted as a transsexual woman at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans.
"A lot of the men here have been cordial,'' said 45-year-old Chelsea native Bissett, who, until she changed her name five years ago, was Michael Blair.
Thanks to a regimen of hormone pills and injections, Blair ``died,'' Bissett told the Herald, ``and Jacquelyn was born.''
Vincent Maloney, the Boston shelter's vice president of operations, said, "You have to change with the times. If breaking down barriers makes them (residents) more productive citizens, so be it.''
Despite her budding breasts, pink paisley top and Lancome-laquered nails, not everyone has embraced Bissett's feminine side – or the fact that a woman who may or may not have male genitals is living in the women's 20-bed dorm.
"He's a project that's not finished,'' spat one female ex-resident who clashed with Bissett. "I have sympathy for what he wants to do, but it shouldn't be shoved down our throats.''

When I was in High school we had a teacher who was female, She was 6"5" she weighed in at probably 225 and had feet that were at least 13's.She shaved every day. and if she had dressed as a male she would have easily passed.
She had a lady friend she lived with.
She was such a brilliant,delightful person, although manly, that everyone loved her. Her deformity , --I suppose you could call it, was overlooked by everyone. She demanded respect and she got it, If a male student handed her any crap she would jack them up like any man would do. We all loved her. She was a Biology teacher and the first class she gave in biology to new classes coming in was to explain her disorder./
I suppose when she died, loved by the whole county, only her Funeral director knew for sure.
I supose we could assume she had mental stress, but if she did we never knew it. We just accepted her for what she was. Perhaps if she had been born today she would have had surgery. I wont argue with you about your choice , since I am not in a position to understand that choice.
Now this womans problem was obvious to everyone, she should have been born a male, but she lived her life as she was, unashamed , unabashed, unconquered. She died at about 80 I would guess.
Your last paragraph lost me completely. You celebrate a 25th anniversary with your partner and she just had a baby 5 years ago? You were married 20 years before you had a child and then had yourself mutilated? Why in the hell would someone do that? You are over 60 with a 5 year old kid , a wife and wearing a dress?? You said you were over 60,In medical terms many men become dysfunctional over 60 it doesnt mean they have to have it cut off. Viagra works. So it isnt large.many men have a small penis. Ted Kennedy has Gynecomastia. It doesnt seem to bother him. Although he is drunk most of the time. You brought up the fact that you dont have sex after 60 . If you are a 60 year old "self-made" woman what makes you think you are going to find someone who would have sex with you or that you will be any better at it as a woman than you were as a man. I dont know much about mutilated men and their orgasms, and believe me I really dont want to. I wish you luck. Youre gonna need it.
I find it peculiar that Michael Blair has chosen an actress's name. It seems to trivialize a serious situation.
In the article one woman was upset that Bissett was allowed to bunk in the woman's section.
I also ran into a similar situation where a transitioning? male temp (his job was temp, not his sex. Though I guess you could say it was :) )at work was allowed to use the women's restroom even though he was not yet equipped as a female.
The woman were upset by this and HR had to come down with an edict saying that until the operation you use the restroom you were born with.
I'm not trying to set you up, but what are your thoughts? It only seems to be common sense to me.
