I think it is significant that Nagin didn't distance himself from Compass (yet, Nagin makes some pretty wild swings)so I think that they are not pointing fingers at each other for now.

I wager that Nagin didn't "know" about this, in the sense that the corruption is mature enough that it is compartmentalized. Don't forget that a lot of the records involved are going to be missing because of the flood.

This might be trickier than it looks to unravel, unless those involved continue the past habit of not being able to shut up when a camera is rolling.

The IRS should know however.

SELECT NAME, SSN from TAXPAYER where EMPLOYER = 'NOLA' and OCCUPATION = 'Police'

".. Don't forget that a lot of the records involved are going to be missing because of the flood."

I don't think that would be decisive against finding out some officers are non-existant and the larger the number the more difficult to cover up once the FBI starts looking into details and names available.

There are too many details in too many places in a real life for a record loss to cover. There are tax records, banking records, licenses, marriages, divorces, and on and on.

The success of a fraud like this depends on no one taking a hard look.

I think a lot of records were also destroyed by Nagin and Blanco as they prevented the Feds from entering their turf.

I am now even more curious as to why that brick building adjacent the Superdome in N.O. that is the "firehouse" was being fired upon (from elsewhere) whenever anyone tried to get into it.

This might also better explain why rescue workers once arrived there were being fired upon, as to specific areas in the city of N.O.

I'm sure payroll records would be electronically stored off site and retrievable.

It's not going to be all that tricky once the feds get involved. They'll get involved because banks would have had to be used and because federal money was given to cities to increase their police forces.....remember that little boondoggle?

Of course, this will lead to other investigations, like FEMA money given to the states for emergency preparedness etc.

It would appear that Katrina brought a BIG broom with her when she decided to hit NO. You know what they say about it's an ill wind that blows nobody good.
