Tunnel-To-Towers Run honors FDNY heroes and Stephen Siller - who ran to his own death...

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Stephen Siller was driving to meet his three older brothers at the Glenwood Country Club Golf Course in New Jersey, so the "perfect foursome" could play a round of golf. A fire buff even before he joined the Fire Department, the West Brighton (Staten Island) native was listening to his scanner when news of the World Trade Center disaster came across. He called his wife, Sally, telling her to let his brothers know he would meet them later; he was going to get his gear and join his company, Squad 1.

Stopped at the mouth of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Stephen left his car and with his equipment on his back, proceeded to run through the tunnel to the site of the World Trade Center in an attempt to hook up with his Squad. It is not known if he did.

Stephen Siller was last seen alive at the corner of West St. and Liberty St. Stephen and his entire Squad perished.

Today was the fourth running of The Firefighter Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run. Mr. Siller's heroic actions on that day are now are recreated as a memorial for the 343 New York firefighters who were among the first unknowing casualties in the war against Islamic extremism. Thousands walk or run the route that Stephen took that fateful day, through a tunnel lined with 343 firemen holding 343 flags.

We should NEVER FORGET.

Not knowing if he joined his squad is horrible, but we know where they all are now! Bless our brave first responders!

We should NEVER FORGET.

And we won't. True heroes like Siller will always be remembered as long as his friends and family tell the rest of us his story.

I have always regarded police, fire fighters and healthcare workers as true heroes, and now I have a name to place with these heroes.

God has a special place for those who so valiantly and courageously give their lives trying to save others.

I still get chills throughout my entire body whenever this story is mentioned. Hero is the only word that comes to mind every time and that is exactly what this man was and will forever be remembered as.
