Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VIII
www.freerepublic.com | September 24, 2005

Posted on 09/24/2005 9:58:36 AM PDT by Howlin

Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.

MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.

An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.

On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.

Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

on the up side, he said everyone down there has treated the drivers like gold, something we don't see much normally anymore.

though the frustration he said he'd do it again in a second, and I believe him, he's that kinda guy...

Watching the flyover on KHOU live webcast, too.

Flooding in residential area in Port Arthur; looks widespread but not deep.

Worst damage here, and north in Lumberton.

Earlier flyover showed Galveston coast is OK.

Ok, so we have waist to chest deep water at Laffite, which runs from 13 to 16 feet above sea level.

We have water running "upstream" in the Vermillion River at Lafayette, the lowest point of which is 20 feet above sea level.

Two sources putting surge around New Orleans at 20 feet, give or take, fair enough?

The surge gets deeper over towards the point of landfall, but for now, let's just stick with 20 feet.

Take a look at this:

Incident of National Significance?

Just talked to son in law and he said tanker drivers are running steadily from Corpus to Houston, some made two trips today. Traffic is an issue so they are picked up at Rosenberg and given a police escort the rest of the way.

He also said both of Valero's refineries, in the Houston area, are firing back up tonight.

I know you all think I'm losing it..lol..and thank you kindly for taking the time to show me where you are speaking of- but I found a completely different Lafitte, LA north of Lafayette..near a lake called Bayou du lac..that's why I was confused.

Do I seem punch-drunk yet? ;)

That would be very bad. But which Laffite are you looking at? The one in lower Jefferson Parish? Or is there another Laffite?

God be praised, the damage isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was bracing myself for the worst scenario, homes totally torn apart like matchsticks and water reaching almost roof tops.
