Hurricane Rita landfall is anticipated within the next few hours. Strong winds and heavy rains are battering southern Louisiana and southeastern Texas.
MSM news crews are shouting over the howling winds as they foolishly describe blowing rain, swaying trees, and crashing waves through rain splattered camera lenses. It's a hurricane. We know these things already.
An 18 wheeler rig reportedly overturned on an I-10 bridge. The fate of the truck driver is unknown at this time. Reports of widespread power outages in Lake Charles. KPLC-TV Lake Charles local news has remarkably improvised their reporting from a remote location. They are taking calls from residents, NWS, and public utility representatives, and alerting residents to local conditions.
On the flip side, CNN announced to the world that law enforcement officers had evacuated from Port Arthur TX with the rest of the population. Engraved looter invitations would have been more elegant.
Godspeed to all those in the path of this storm.

Yeah, there are subdivisions all along the Trinity River below Lake Livingston and above Liberty.
The geometry's not real good for Anahuac either, but the pros will know if a flood would disperse across the marshes before it got there.
New Orleans mayor to evacuees: C'mon back!
Re-entry, you know.
There are houses there? I dont see that many on the Google Earth....how far out of the banks will that river flow?
That is good stuff. Can you grab one from the Trinity, above Lake Livingston?
But Valero Energy reported Saturday that recovery teams found "significant damage" to its oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, following the hurricane. Shell reported wind damage to its Motiva facility in Port Arthur.

Trinity River Authority websites are not functioning at the moment.
The Trinity River Authority of Texas is a political subdivision of the state of Texas charged by legislative mandate with three functions. These include maintenance of a master plan for basin-wide development, serving as local sponsor for federal water projects and providing services authorized by the Texas Legislature within the defined territory of TRA.
Public services currently provided by the Authority include wastewater treatment, water treatment, recreation and reservoir facilities. TRA also serves as a conduit for tax-exempt financing for municipal water and wastewater facilities and industrial air and water pollution control facilities. On a functional basis, the Authority operates as a governmental water utility. Each operating or financing endeavor of TRA is an independent financial entity. The Authority receives no revenues from a direct tax base or appropriations from the state or federal government. TRA is only compensated by those using the services for which they have contracted, and only to the degree services are received.
Yes, that makes sense. The surge and the run-off can't retreat into the gulf, and the winds are pushing more water north.
One million acre-feet and change, divided by the area it spreads out over...it'd take a big comp to crunch but I guarantee you the guys that man that dam have already run it.
PS. DeLormedoesn't display houses, but the street layout of subdivisions is very distinctive. It's not wall to wall residential area, but there are more than a handfull.
I'm not sure who operates it.
No, I'm far from the areas that will flood.
Gibson on Fox showing the levee repair now
that is good to hear
I saw this after I posted the other Trinity River link - the previous one, Goodrich, is below the dam.

Riverside, just above Lake Livingston. I'm sure the lake fills from many sources other than Trinity River above - it is a big reservoir.
Thanks...from the footer to that story, some good news for a change:
In Texas, the Jefferson County Sheriff's department said people who were
trapped in an apartment building near Beaumont were able to get out
unharmed.
That was a collapsed apartment building.
One for the good guys!
