With an American city swamped by one great hurricane and then by another one less than a month later, with federal forecasters ticking down the annual list of 21 names for tropical storms at a record clip, it is no surprise that debate has flared over the role of global warming.
After all, one of the clearest signals that human actions have pushed recent warming beyond natural cycles is a measured buildup of heat in the world's oceans, and oceanic heat is the fuel that powers hurricanes.
The issue has been addressed from starkly different vantage points. For example, former Vice President Al Gore has conducted a continuing speaking tour on the need to cut heat-trapping pollution, while Senator James M. Inhofe, Republican of Oklahoma, has accused environmental campaigners of fomenting unfounded fears about human-driven warming.
So what is the state of the science behind the arguments over the message sent by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina?
What is clear is that an array of leading experts on oceans and climate agree that the tropical oceans have warmed in a way that is hard to attribute to anything other than overall warming of the climate from the buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse-gas emissions.
It is also clear to many climate scientists and oceanographers that warmer oceans will eventually increase the intensity and rainfall of hurricanes, but not necessarily their frequency.
In fact, two recent studies of hurricanes, by different scientists using different methods, claimed to detect a big rise in hurricane intensity around the world over the last several decades.
But the authors of both analyses acknowledged that more data would be needed to confirm a link to human-caused warming.

Horseapples. This is the worst sort of advocacy journalism, in bed with advocacy "science", which by the way is to real science what professional wrestling is to real wrestling.
Sun's Output Increasing in Possible Trend Fueling Global Warming

If the NYT would quit digging up dirt long enough to look up into the sky, they might notice the answer in right in front of them. The Sun.
Then they can hire John Edwards and Al Gore to help them prove that SUVs, George W. Bush, and chocolate milk shakes are causing the Sun to get hotter.
The construction of Thousands of Windmills in the American west is disrupting the natural west to east atmospheric flow. This weakened steering current cannot steer or shear the east to west moving Hurricanes to the extent that they did before.

Everytime we have a heatwave in a major city we read news reports about global warming.
Everytime we have a flurry of hurricanes we get bombarded with global warming.
But, when we have a blizzard, you do not hear a thing.
When we have a cold-snap, you do not hear about warming.
Liberals are opportunists --- and more and more people are catching onto their "cry wolf" hysteria.
Be careful. Soon they will link our space program to solar warming!
> I personally believe that hurricanes are changing their tactics and are no longer causing random disaster but are seeking areas and industries where humans are causing global warming and purposely going there to destroy them. <
No, it's because hurricanes hate our freedom. They're part of an Axis of EvilDoers, including Tornadoes, Blizzards, and Droughts.
CO2 is only the third strongest greenhouse gas. The first is water vapor ( I'd like to see them tackle THAT one) and The second, methane. The two biggest sources of methane are: termites and cows. (According to my meteorology professor)
There's a great little book out I had to read for my class in college called, How to Lie With Statistics. I just got it a couple years ago, so I believe it's still available. Once you read that, you will NEVER believe another study again.
that's because those hurricanes occurred during the impending ice age.
"But your point is even more apparent. 0.03% = 0.0003 or 3 parts out of 10,000..
And it's probably changed from 0.000297 to 0.0003 because of man."
So if man is reponsible for even as much as 10% of the CO2 levels and the Kyoto Treaty would have us cut back 10% on manmade emissions that puts the level decreased by 0.000003 of the THIRD strongest greenhouse gas. Wow, that really helps, doesn't it?
I am constantly amazed when the experts insist that there is one and only one reason for an occurrence. I do believe there is some global warming. It has happened several times in the past and will be followed by global cooling. Some is man made, most is a natural cycle. There is also a well documented cycle of hurricane activity.
Do any of these chicken littles know the hurricane frequency and strength of those storms in AD 1000, how about 6th century BC.
Whose right?

Sun's Output Increasing in Possible Trend Fueling Global Warming
By Robert Roy Britt
Senior Science Writer
NOT the clowns at the NYT!!!!!!!!!!
This is the key to the entire article. It means, in effect, "All the other discussions in this article, about what we can/should do about global warming is DRIVEL, because we don't have a CLUE whether anything WE are doing is affecting variations in climate." We have known for a century that there have been climate variations on the earth - and the most dramatic changes, at that, occurred long before the human population did anything that amounted to a spit in the ocean. So what's the whole point of the article? Undoubtably to ignore this sentence!
>have warmed in a way that is hard to attribute to anything other than overall warming of the climate from the buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse-gas emissions<
How about attributing WARMING to the SUN?
As opposed to rampant UNSCIENTIFIC SPECULATION about man-made causes?
The earth is NOT a closed system, which is the ONLY way these CLOWNS are able to "model" to reach their bogus conclusions.
Well if the Global warming greenies are right we want to INCREASE air pollution, by burning lots of dirty coal to get the particulate matter way up and reflect all that nasty solar radiation back into space.
