Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VI
NHC - NOAA ^ | 23 September 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 09/23/2005 9:39:06 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Dangerous Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall in the northeast Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours. Tornados have spawned in Louisiana. Water is filling the Ninth Ward of New Orleans again. A bus carrying elderly evacuees was gutted by fire this morning outside Dallas, with multiple fatalities. Television crews have positioned their hurricane reporters throughout the region to attain maximum drama effects. Whoooooa.

My local radio just said stock trading is going up because Rita isn't going to cause as much damage as initially feared.

I'm thinking of asking the traders a question from GREATER TUNA...."whatayouknow?"

Accent is what makes the line work!

If he made an example of one of them and totally humiliated one reporter that would stop it. There needs to be consequences for these actions. With President Bush, there are never consequences for treating him with disrespect.

Actually, last time he was holed up in a armed forces retirement home. This time, because he was in a rush to get to Galveston Bay (can't remember the town, but it's on the mainland between Galveston and Houston), he's stuck in Houston, so he'll get electricity back quickly.

Area code for New Orleans is 504.
I live here- and I didn't get a call! But then, I'm in the hated Jefferson parish. Who would she be calling in New Orleans anyway- it's deserted except for a few nutballs or criminals.
Maybe you should feel all warm and fuzzy- our Governor CARES for you, even way up there in PA!
Did she tell you to write your S.S.number on your arm if you insist on staying in Philly?? -lol

"Winds are gusting to 80 miles per hour."

That's almost as bad as it gets up here in the NW. But if it levelled off at 80 mph down there, you'd think you were getting off easy.

LOL----I have done that many times, while holding my baby granddaughter ----

How are you guys??? It sounds like northwest La could be in for some heavy rain....

We have some friends that live in Nacogdoches...and they are FREAKING....they don't want to waste gas by coming here, if there is JUST rain...but then they hear about 2 feet, and they don't know what to do...

OTOH>...I told my husband I might as well turn on the sprinklers because the DFW area is predicting NO RAIN.

Are you guys preparing for flooding or anything?

Maybe this will help:

Boiling is the most reliable method for killing microbes and parasites. Bring water to a rolling boil and keep it simmering for at least several minutes. Add one minute of boiling to the initial 10 minutes for every 1,000 feet above sea level. Cover the pot to shorten boiling time and conserve fuel.

When boiling is not practical, chemical disinfection should be used. Common household bleach contains a chlorine compound that will disinfect water. The treated water should be mixed thoroughly and allowed to stand, preferably covered, for 30 minutes.

Most emergency experts and health officials suggest a mixture of 8 drops of bleach to a gallon of generally clear water for best results. Based on environment or cloudiness of the water, you may want to change the quantity of drops to 16 per gallon of cloudy or murky water.

The water should have a slight chlorine odor; if not, repeat the dosage and allow the water to stand for an additional 15 minutes.

If the treated water has too strong a chlorine taste, it can be made more pleasing by allowing the water to stand exposed to the air for a few hours

or by pouring it from one clean container to another several times.

Rita seems to be weakening for now on the IR loop:

Hopefully that trend will continue.
