Dangerous Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall in the northeast Gulf of Mexico within 24 hours. Tornados have spawned in Louisiana. Water is filling the Ninth Ward of New Orleans again. A bus carrying elderly evacuees was gutted by fire this morning outside Dallas, with multiple fatalities. Television crews have positioned their hurricane reporters throughout the region to attain maximum drama effects. Whoooooa.

Frank Billingsly who has been the NBC weatherman in Houston who has been a big time drama king has looked down the past 30 minutes. He said that people that are very stressed out and panicked from Houston should start breathing a sigh of relief. He said it looks like it will be moving toward Louisiana.
I feel sorry for all of those people who were on the road for 18-24 hours.
The unfortunate thing about this for Houston is that the next time there is a big storm like this, most Houstonians/Galvestonians will stay put and this could be deadly next time around.
Surfside and Rosharon now without power. (Dinky towns south of Houston for non-locals).
I'm in Nederland, about four blocks north of the Port Arthur city limits (on its north side). Sorry if I haven't been able to answer questions. Pretty busy here. Several power dips; Some pretty big gusts in the past fifteen minutes. Again, it looks to be a long night.

I make a heck of a sangria margarita, so everyone over to my house when this is over. =)
Smoking alright....... but something other than a cigarette may have been the root cause.

...Witnesses reported the fire started shortly after the bus stopped for a tire change. David Robertson, a Dallas County Sheriff's deputy, said a piece of metal lodged in a wheel may have caused the brakes to lock, overheat and ignite...
I hope you realize that it was meant to be a compliment.
NautiNurse will grab something and ask you to cough twice....

Mexico offering shelters for people when this is over. Wouldn't it be ironic if illegals ended up having to go back to their own country.
This site is great. Thanks.
Stay safe.
Look at the size of this thing on Water Vapor!
The monster called Rita!

DG, what's your most trusted locals saying about landfall, wind speed etc.
Has anyone thought of a good drinking game with Shep yet? That would be about the only way I'll watch him.
Good report. The man was amazingly concise and articulate with the hyenas yapping around his stretcher
i swear i ain't seeing much west here lately. i'm gonna go eat supper and see if an hour makes a difference.
Looks like The Matrix - that does
Can Shep Smith borrow your garage? He's looking for a place to report from.......actually, if he asks, say no, please!
Stay safe
